Mothers Day Crafts Are The Best

My mother’s birthday falls only a few days away from Mother’s Day, an unlucky coincidence akin to having your birthday close to Christmas. Instead of two separate holidays, two separate excuses for receiving gifts, you get two occasions lumped unsatisfactorily into one. I always felt so bad for friends with late December birthdays.

When I was young, I would participate in easy mother’s day crafts in school or Girl Scouts and my mom would reap the benefits in a lumped celebration at the beginning of May. I think I was under the assumption that we celebrated all moms on one day, and they no longer had birthdays.  Nonetheless, I know she loved these mother’s day present ideas including lopsided pottery, and popsicle stick mother’s day crafts for kids.  No matter how hopelessly unusable, every mother loves homemade gifts from her children.

My Mothers Day Craft

As I’ve grown a little older and wiser, I have tried to separate the two occasions for the benefit of my mom. For her birthday, I buy her something I know she wants and yet still continue the craft tradition by looking for homemade mother’s day gift ideas. These mother’s day crafts are all the more cherished for the demonstration of time and effort put into them. In recent years, creative gifts for mother’s day have included more complex crochet or embroidery items, as I’ve learned the crafts. I spent months on a particular crochet sweater shawl with pretty picot edge. She cried when she opened it.

Now that I’m aunt to a young niece and younger nephew, I’m starting to re-live the simple pleasures of those easy mother’s day crafts. I can help my eldest sister’s children with homemade mother’s day gift ideas for both their mother and my mother. It’s a double-dose of mother’s day craft fun! Both moms appreciate the thought more than anything and grandma is especially touched by generations crafting together.

Another Great Way To Make Mothers Day Gifts

With the help of two creative toddlers, I can organize an afternoon of craft activities for mother’s day. They adore the idea of sneaking off and surprising the moms with something they made themselves. We can use materials from the around the house and go hunting for fun beads, buttons, ribbons and more. Often a very long process, my niece enjoys selecting her craft materials even more than crafting itself.

I especially love easy mother’s day crafts that teach my niece and nephew about the importance of recycling. We collect empty yogurt cups and turn them into paper-covered bud vases, perfect for clippings from mom’s extensive gardens. We take old scratched or unused CDs and turn them into sparkly ornaments or scrapbook paper letter holders for Mom. With the help of ribbons and a few, colorful buttons, we use the empty jewel cases as hanging picture frames.  There is never enough room for pictures of grandkids.

Go off and enjoy some easy mother’s day crafts yourself. You’ll have a blast!
