Back To Nature Decor
You may want to embrace the bounty of nature's harvest with filling your front yard outside and your living areas inside with the best of its yield. What I like to do is put together a grapevine twisty garland that hangs from the soffit of my front porch. Get lots of long, dried grapevine to cover your porch and tuck in some pretty fall oak and maple leaves here and there so the garland will stand out. Add branches of bittersweet orange vines, with their orange berries in yellow hulls, to the basic structure of the grapevine to make it thick, full and blazing orange! Use florist wire to tie it into the grapevine and bend it around to shape it. Indian corn tied with raffia in a bunch of 3-5 can be hung from porch lights and mailboxes. Your local farmers market may have some of the plants you need for your creations.
A chili wreath is a fully edible (albeit hot!) outdoor decoration that will last 1-2 years. Make it with numerous chilies for a dark orange color. The traditional sheaf of wheat still works for a tabletop centerpiece. It stands upright when you use dried, preserved wheat tied in a cone shaped bundle with twine. Accent the twine with clusters of acorns. Make several of various sizes and place around the house. Pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns are still the genuine article when it comes to Halloween night. The ancient Irish would carve faces in turnips. You can get turnips and slice off the tops and bottoms. Hollow them out so you can fit them over a small flashlight or simply display them with variety of frightening faces.
Enrich your display with a few hard shell gourds. These are the dried and hardened varieties of gourds you can grow in your garden. Some varieties with descriptive names include the bottle gourd, banana gourd, canteen gourd, warty gourd (yes, it’s ugly alright), and birdhouse gourd shaped like a giant Hershey’s kiss. These are big gourds; but when dried are a hollow woody shell that is colored brown or tan. Crafters use these gourds for a variety of crafty things because they don’t rot after picked but turn into a useable shell. Ornamental gourds are small and come in a color assortment of orange, yellow, green, white, striped and bi-color. They are sometimes called by the uninitiated “those squash things” but they are not edible. They do well in baskets to show off warm colors.
Speaking of flowers, nothing says fall quite like Mums. That moniker is short for Chrysanthemums. You probably knew that; but I have to admit I didn’t! They are fall bloomers and are a favorite because of the longevity of their cut blooms. Get those with yellow, gold or bronze coloring. Poppies have the right seasonal color. The California Poppy is orange, the Oriental Poppy is a deep orange and the Corn Poppy is crimson. Collect all the colors and put together in a large presentation. Dahlia is a fall flowering plant that comes in a brick color. Freesia is orange and has elegant form and a long vase life. Its intense, sweet citrusy perfume delights your senses too. Other plants for accenting arrangements include dried cattails, maple leaf sprays, Chinese Lantern plants, Marigolds and Sunflowers. Even pheasant feathers, seed pods and berries are used beautifully.
