On the last day of October you’ll likely be sporting a very spooky persona for a long night of partying. Don't be afraid, however, to don a different guise--less ghoulish, more foolish! Chew over various costuming options I’ve conjured up for your next Halloween party ensemble. These costumes can be worn by adults (who are acting like kids!). Part of the fun is gathering up the pieces and parts to make an outfit; instead of a store-bought get-up that contains too many cheap, plastic parts for my taste. Birthday Party Planning Basics

Begin your party planning by deciding on a theme for the party. Get your child involved by asking him or her for ideas, or consider one of the following:

Animal Theme Party – If your child is an animal lover or has a favorite animal cartoon character, then consider making that the focus of the party. For example, if your child loves dogs, you could throw a puppy party. Or, if Blue is your child’s favorite dog, you could throw a Blues Clue party.
Character Theme Party – A character theme party is perfect for the child who loves cartoon, movie or book characters like Spiderman, Dora the Explorer, Elmo, the Backyardigans, or other characters.
Nature Theme Party – Whether your child has a passion for space, the ocean, or any bit of nature in between, it could potentially make a great party theme. Consider ideas like a garden party for your flower child, an ocean party for your little fish, or a safari party for your little explorer.
Other Theme Party Ideas – If your child loves stories of fair princesses and valiant knights, then regale him or her with a princesses and knights party. For your little beach bum, consider having a luau. Or, strike a chord with a musical theme like Baby Einstein for a toddler or High School Musical for your preteen or teen.

Once you’ve chosen a theme, selecting party supplies is a breeze. Just make a list of the items you think you’ll need—like plates, cups, napkins, balloons, and other decorations—or print out a premade party supplies checklist so you don’t forget anything. If you’re crafty, it’s easy to make your own party invitations. Just fold sheets of colorful construction paper in half, then in half again. Decorate the covers with theme-appropriate drawings, stickers or stamps, and write the party details inside. Or, cut card stock in a shape related to your theme—like a fish for an ocean party—decorate the top of the card, and write the party details on the back. If desired, you can include a cute message above the party details, like “Little Joey’s turning one. Let’s get together and have some fun!” Whether you purchase invitations or make your own, you should mail them about three weeks before the party to give your guests’ parents time to purchase presents and reserve the date.

Planning Your Party Menu

Party foods can include anything from simple pizza or hot dogs to themed treats like animal face cupcakes. Whatever you decided to serve, make sure to keep the following in mind while planning your menu.

Keep it simple. Most small children will not eat something they don’t recognize. You are probably a fabulous cook and could whip up some amazing sliced cucumber appetizers for your daughter’s spa party or serve hickory smoked barbeque sandwiches for your son’s Wild West theme, but it will probably be wasted on the children. Lower your expectations for younger guests. They are much more likely to eat something familiar. Instead of a gourmet treat, a space theme party could include mini bagel “planet pizzas,” and a simple hot dog and hamburger cookout works well for a Wild West party.
Don’t be disappointed if not much is eaten. No matter how much time you spend making cool, creative, theme-related treats, your guests will likely be too excited by games, friends and presents to spend much time at a table. Even the cake and ice cream is likely to go half-eaten.
Lower your nutritional expectations. Fortunately, a birthday party is a special occasion, and a little extra cake and ice cream won’t ruin your goal of raising a healthy child.

Decorating for the Big Day

There are endless possibilities when it comes to decorations for a child’s birthday party. Here are a few general ideas to get your creative juices flowing; any of these ideas can be tailored for a specific party theme.

Streamers – Buy streamers in 2 or 3 bright colors that match your other partyware. Twist the streamers together, and hang them along the walls or wrap them around banisters or floor lamps. You can also use streamers to create curtains across the doorways leading into the main party area, or create a canopy over the party table. To do the latter, attach the streamers to a chandelier or a central point on the ceiling, and then cascade them out to the sides of the room.
Balloons – Tie brightly-colored balloons in bunches of 3, and attach the bunches to the backs of chairs or to balloon weights. If desired, you can incorporate theme-complimentary Mylar balloons into the mix. For example, you could purchase a few dog-shaped balloons for a puppy party, and mix them with latex balloons.
Centerpieces – Buy or create a table centerpiece that coordinates with your theme, set it on the party table, and surround it with a sprinkling of confetti. You can make a centerpiece using materials like construction paper-covered shoeboxes, poster board, theme-related toys, hats, and other objects. For example, you could create a treasure chest for an ocean or pirate party by covering a cardboard box with brown paper and strips of gold foil, filling the box with plastic beads and gold coins, and sprinkling a few chocolate coins around the box for your guests to enjoy later.
Placemats – Set coloring book pages on the party table as placemats, and let your guests color them as an icebreaker activity. Laminate the colored placemats using contact paper, and then send them home with your guests as fun keepsakes.
Banners – Hang a birthday banner at the entrance to the party area to welcome your guests and announce your celebration. For an extra special touch, purchase a personalized banner imprinted with a custom message, like “Happy 5th Birthday, Suzie!”
Party Favors – If you plan to give your guests favor bags or boxes at the end of the party, cluster them on a table with a themed centerpiece, a stuffed animal, or a weighted bunch of balloons at the center to turn your favors into a decoration.
Wall Decorations – Make your own wall cut-outs to compliment your party theme. Draw themed designs on construction paper or poster board, cut them out, and affix them to the walls with tape or other easily-removable adhesive.
Window & Sidewalk Decorations – Use window markers to draw theme-related pictures or birthday messages on windows throughout the main party area, or put themed wall stickers on the walls and windows. You can also use chalk to draw pictures on the driveway and/or the sidewalk leading up to the front door.
Other Decorations – Other decorative accents may include theme-complimentary party blowers, hats, pinatas, toys, or even movie or travel posters.

Planning Great Games & Cool Crafts

All children love to be creative, so the more hands-on projects you have planned, the more successful the party will be. Consider planning crafts and games that go along with your chosen party theme, such as a game of Pit Stop Races for a racecar party or a Lion Face Craft for a jungle party. You may also want to consider the following traditional games to use as filler between activities or as additional entertainment in case the other activities you’ve planned end sooner than expected:

As your party winds down, show your guests that gift giving goes both ways by presenting them with themed party favors. This gesture will make the children feel special, and your child will feel great about sharing with friends.

After all the celebrating is over and your child has smothered you with kisses for such a terrific party, remember to send your guests thank you notes. Help your child fill in the cards and address them to all the children who attended the party. If desired, you can include a photo from the party with each card. You can spread this project over a few days so it doesn’t become too overwhelming for your child. Just remind your child how nice it feels when he or she receives mail and that the cards and photos will remind the children of the super time they had at your child’s birthday party.

Once the thank you notes have been mailed, you can sit back and relax, knowing that your efforts were worthwhile because your child will always remember the perfect birthday you planned…at least until next year!

Halloween Cookies: Witch Fingers

Yield: About 4-5 Dozen cookies, depending on how big you want your fingers

Ingredients:

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup whole, blanched almonds
1 tube red decorator gel

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F
Combine the flour, salt, and baking powder in a bowl and set aside.
In another bowl, mix together the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla. Once this is thoroughly mixed, beat in the dry ingredients. Cover and refrigerate for about 30 minutes.
Lightly spray a cookie sheet with non-sticky spray.
Once the dough is chilled, work with one quarter of the dough at a time, keeping the rest in the fridge.
Divide the quarter into heaping teaspoons full of dough. Roll these into finger shaped cookies. (My recommendation: If you pinch just a little of the dough about 1/3 from the top of the cookie, and pinch the dough about 1/3 from the bottom of the cookie, it will cause "knuckles" to appear...Then take a knife and make some slahes on the knuckles.)
Make the cookies smaller than you believe they should be. The cookies will rise and if they are too big you will end up with fat witch fingers.
Press one almond firmly onto the top of each cookie - these are the fingernails.
Use the red food coloring to paint the nails red, if you want (You don't have to do this...I didn't last year and the almonds start to brown so they looked very creepy)
Bake the cookies for 20-25 minutes, or until a golden color

Halloween Party 101

Everyone loves a house decorated for Halloween. Decorating for the holiday is both fun and easy – if you do it right and keep it simple. The easiest of decorations truly go a long way. Here is a checklist to make sure you have the scariest haunted house on the block!

1) Black Streamers – Leave no ceiling untouched!

2) Fake Spider Webs – Get these at any craft store, they are super easy to put up and really neat…cheap too. Scatter with plastic black spiders

3) Cardboard Graves (lots with R.I.P) paint cardboard grey stand up with ply wood

4) Bowls of candy corn, everywhere and anywhere

5) Corn husks, if you live by a farm great! If not you should be able to find some at craft stores

6) Lots of Jack-O-Lanterns (DUH)

7) White sheets over all furniture for a cool and creepy effect

8) Bug/Spider confetti for any and all surfaces (assuming you have a good vacume)

9) Caution tape around your front door

10) Orange Christmas lights… should be all over the place great way to enter a room. Easy to find this time of year

11) ‘13’ cut out black paper and paste ‘13’ on front door or 666...your choice

12) Black lights in at least some light bulbs (your friends’ costumes will look even cooler)

13) Dry ice in the punch bowl, pretty much a must for Halloween!

Fall is Football Party Time!

Don’t wait for the Super Bowl to throw a killer football-bash! As soon as the leaves get crisp, I like to start watching football on an industrial level, and what could be more fun than throwing a party in order to watch the game with a bunch of friends?

Decorating for a football party can be fairly simple. It shouldn’t take too much to decorate your den or family room. Start your decorating with the colors of your favorite team. Put together balloons, streamers, curling ribbon, and pay tribute to your favorite pro team by adding logo pennants, caps, bats, or imprinted footballs.

If your party is indoors, or if you are eating in a separate room, streamers offer an economical way to splash lots of team color around the site of the party. Create a fun and colorful effect by draping printed streamers from the center of the ceiling to the walls on each side of the room. The streamers can be twisted after they are anchored to a ceiling wall or table for a more dimensional look. They also look terrific hanging from doorframes or cascading vertically down walls.

Setting a table with a football theme could include suing fake grass to create a serving area that resembles a football stadium. Use white athletic tape to make the yard lines and foul lines. Place a football shaped piece of the "field" (same material as the table cover grass) under each plate as a placemat on the table where the guests will eat. Set a personalized Football at each place setting as a place card.

Turn well-washed helmets upside down, and use them as serving bowls for dry snacks such as chips, pretzels or popcorn. And add other personalized items to celebrate your favorite team.

Halloween Costumes

Back when Madgamer was a kid, Halloween costumes were a lot simpler. I remember dressing one year as a cowboy, the next as a “hobo,” and the next year I was a vampire. Every one of those costumes I wore as a kid seemed to be made out of clothing and other materials that we already had. Or, maybe it took a fifty-cent pair of plastic fangs and some fake blood. But I do not recall heading to a store for an intricate costume the likes of which can be found today.

Not that it wouldn’t have been great! I think that I would have loved dressing up in some of the great costumes available nowadays. I mean just check out some of the costumes that are available in 2007:

For kids there are full-size Darth Vader costumes that come complete with a light saber and black boots. Or the little ones can go dressed as Belle from the great Disney movie in a dress that might be seen on the red carpets of Hollywood. And, of course, this year perhaps the most popular costume is going to be based on another Disney venture: The Pirates of the Caribbean. I mean, what little boy won’t want to become Captain Jack Sparrow for Halloween?

And there’s even all kinds of costumes out there for adults who want to dress-up for Halloween. The women can go as Betty Boop, a corpse bride, or even a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader. And meanwhile, all the grown-up little boys can still dress up like Captain Jack!

Halloween Party Games!!

It’s that time of year again, and time to start planning the best Halloween party ever. Now granted, Madgamer is typically plugged into his Xbox, and unable to break away from the screen in order to attend social events. But when it comes to Halloween, well, I gotta get up and get myself some more traditional fun – not to mention handful after handful of candy.

If you are planning a Halloween-themed party this year, there are all kinds of great decorations and costumes and trinkets available through the site. Then, when it comes to filling in the party hours with some excellent games, Madgamer has looked around the ‘net for some terrific ideas.

Mummy Game

Pair everybody up, and give each team a roll of toilet paper. Then, have one member of each team wrap the other up in the style of ancient Egypt – assuming they used Charmin. Let the mummy-wrappers go for about a minute or so, and then the most “mummified” is the winner.

Scare the Crow

This game can get pretty messy, so try and do it in the backyard (or in the garage if the weather’s bad). Form teams of three or four, depending on the size of your party, and give everybody a pile of old clothing, particularly shirt and jeans, a clump of hay for filling the scarecrow’s body, and a pumpkin for a head. See which team can build the best scarecrow, and winning team gets a prize.

Jinx

At the start of your party give all guests a bag of candy with about two-dozen pieces or so and tell everybody a list of five-to-ten words that are “forbidden” – try using words like “Halloween” or “Trick-r-treat” or “candy.” Make sure everybody knows the words, and then whenever one guest catches another guest using on of the “jinxed” words, the offender has to hand over a piece of candy. See who has the most candy left at the end of the party.

Similar combinations of simple ingredients available just about everywhere are used in Mediterranean cooking. This makes it super easy for you to take a crack at it.
