Everyone enjoys some fresh new music. Music costs these days are going up, because artists and record companies have to make up for all the free music downloads and file sharing that goes around. There is an argument about whether or not free music downloading is helping or hurting the industry.

The group that thinks that the music industry is suffering from free music downloads, looks at all the stats and the number of free music going around, and think of what they would have earned if each of those songs or albums brought in money. They take this number and say this is what they are losing to online file sharing. Many people think that this kind of music downloading is unethical, because the consumer is not paying for the good or service that they are receiving, when otherwise they would pay to have the songs on a CD. There have been legal cases against Napster and other free music downloads sites for breaching copyright laws that protect the artist and record company. When people are getting it for free and doing what they want with the songs, the copyright laws are ignored and that protection is lost. There are literally millions of free music downloads throughout the United States every year. CD sales are declining. Of course, while CD sales are declining, sales of paid online music downloads are increasing. But the music industry argues that it is not enough to cover what they are losing, and that artists and record companies are being undercut and losing their credibility to sell anything when most consumers know that its possible to get a lot of songs for free.

While consumers are aware of the Napster case and ethical dilemmas involved, often they do not take a stand because online file sharing can be so easy. Some consumers and business analysts say that the free music downloads are not hurting the industry as much as it claims. When songs are shared freely online, it builds a fan base for artists. Consumers continue to pay high ticket prices for live concerts and events. It is argued that newer artists can get the attention and listening base necessary to break into a headlining music career by sharing free music downloads. Once consumers have gotten a couple of free songs from an artist they like, they will go ahead and buy more music from that artist because they are sure of liking it. Some online music companies offer free music downloads as a bonus with purchase of other songs or other comparable items to bring in the free-searching listeners. When big record companies complain about losing money, much of the time it falls on deaf ears because, even though there are many people involved in the studio and technical supporting process required for a song to top the charts, the artist themselves and the record executives get the vast majority of the profit pie. The support personnel are not in high paying positions, whether or not the music is being shared for free, and those who are making profit are raking in millions, so please don't argue to us about a $0.75 song.

This is a complex conversation about the economics of the music industry and its consumers, but both sides of the argument are strong. As technology is improving, the music sector of the media industry is getting pressures to change how it makes money. Businesses will get creative with their profitability opportunities, and consumers will demand a middle ground. Over the next couple of years we will see where that takes us.

Perhaps the most stunning feature of the performance was the silence. After each number, a stunning silence filled the hall as the audience consumed the last of the power chord or six part vocal harmony. The last song, “Peace Be With You, Dawg.” left the audience sobbing. Never had deafening guitar solos blended so well with a gospel choir. As the concert ended, it was announced that the proceeds from the rock tee shirts sold outside the concert hall would go towards promoting peace between nerds and bullies. Thousands of shirts were sold in a matter of minutes, as those that were unable to get tickets for the concert flooded the sales kiosks to buy their rock tee shirts.

That night, there were no police sirens throughout all of New York City. Gang bangers had decided to take the night off, and drugees got a natural high from the music of “Rock My Gospel.” Suddenly it seemed they no longer needed hallucinogens to believe in God. Angry cabbies were suddenly subdued by the steely lyrics emanating over the airwaves. The news of this phenomenal new band spread across the world faster than nuclear radiation. Within hours of “Rock My Gospel’s” first performance, Chinese artists were scrambling for a way to record a knock off, and Indian’s were figuring out how to translate the lyrics into something more up beat. When interviewed by the BBC, Rock My Gospel’s leader, Sivle Yeslserp said, “it was about time that people wake up and work together for once, if that means I gotta tell them through my guitar solos and our Choir’s power chords, so be it, I gotta get the word out.”

Rock tee shirts for “Rock My Gospel” sold out worldwide in less than a week. New York City has yet to “recover” from the initial shock of seeing a new kind of musical fusion being born in its stadium. For the first time ever, people in central park nodded to one another and tipped their hats. In the wake of this successful opening, critics everywhere wondered where the band would go next. Yet “Rock My Gospel” never performed again. One night a bright pillar of light flashed on top of the tour bus for “Rock My Gospel”, and the band disappeared.

“Grandpa, tell me a story.”

Little Johnny sat on his Grandpa’s lap, waiting for Grandpa to tell a story.

“Johnny, when I was a kid, I used to drive to school, and it was easy both ways.”

“Nuh-uh Grandpa, you’re lying. You can’t have it be easy both ways. One way is down and the other must be up!” Said Johnny.

“Back in my day, there were these things, they were like the homobiles you ride today, except that they didn’t require you to peddle at all.” Grandpa sighed, remembering the good old days.

“How did they work Grandpa?” Johnny asked earnestly.

“Well, there used to be this liquid, it was called oil, and it used to make the world go around. Everybody wanted it, they called it ‘Black Gold’ if you can believe that.” Grandpa Devon looked at his grandson.

“Grandpa, nothing’s more valuable than gold, you know that.” Johnny gave his predecessor an odd look.

“Well when I was little, the world couldn’t fathom what it would be like without oil. Everybody wanted it. In fact, they wanted it so much that they would fight each other to get it. Nobody could imagine a world in which there was no replacement for oil, so some people even tried to find alternatives. But there was no replacement, and so everyone fought for years, trying to get the oil, but eventually there just wasn’t anymore.” Grandpa sighed again, his eyes unfocused in the memory of a distant past.

“Well what did oil do, besides let people go places without peddling?” Johnny asked.

“Johnny, I don’t know how to say this, but things used to be a lot better before you were born. Do you know your mother’s violin? Have you ever listened to her play it?” Grandpa asked.

“Yeah, I like my mom’s violin.” Johnny responded.

“Well imagine thousands of different sounds, many of them impossible to make on a violin or a trumpet. And there were these things, MP3 downloads, that allowed you to take thousands of songs with wonderful sounds and put them onto a small object the size of your hand.” Grandpa held out a finger and a thumb and pointed to it. “It would fit right between my finger and my thumb.”

“Wow! Where would you get MP3 downloads?” asked Johnny.

“Well there was this thing called the internet, it allowed everyone to talk to everyone else. It was an amazing thing. It let people access almost all the music ever created, and then those people would put the music on their little music boxes, and they would listen to the music for hours and hours, each song completely different from another.”

“Grandpa, do you have a music box?” Johnny asked.

“Well, if you promise not to tell anyone, I have something to show you.” Grandpa said, with a twinkle in his eye. “Promise not to tell anyone, not even your mother? She would be so jealous. Pinkie swear!” Said Grandpa.

“Pinkie swear.” Said Johnny.

Grandpa stood up and walked over to his secretary. He pulled a key out of his pocket and opened a wooden drawer. He held up a small metal object. “This holds more music than your mother has ever played in her entire life. Thousands of MP3 downloads are inside this metal box.”

“Can I hear the MP3 downloads?” Asked Johnny.

“Ok…” Grandpa began cranking a small knob, and a light flickered on the music box. A cord traveled to a small set of speakers, and an MP3 download began to play.

During the 60's Pink Floyd was still experimenting with their sound but quickly broke off from the psychadelic scene. By the 70's they had established their sound through carefully crafted keyboard, bass, and guitar harmonies as well a stringing together a series of philosophical lyrics and sounds for the listener's pleasure. They could not be placed in a genre and quicky had a watershed moment due to their collaboration, for it was in 1973 that their album "The Dark Side of the Moon," became a huge hit. It hit #1 on the sales and Pop Charts and stayed there for a whopping 741 weeks, only being removed on a technicality making it the #2 selling album of all time. Songs like "Money," "Us and Them," and "Time" cemented the band as a single making philosphical power house in the music industry and showed the band what success truly was.

Soon after the band decided to make another album called "Wish You Were Here" which became incredibly successful even though it was in the shadow of Dark Side. The album focused on the absence of Syd Barret from their band as well as the absence of humanity in the music industry. The first through "Wish You Were Here" and "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" while the latter is through "Welcome to the Machine" and "Have a Cigar."

Soon after Roger Waters took creative control of the band which manifest itself in the album "Animals" and then in the 1979 rock epic, "The Wall." The album rocketed them to success once again but soon tore the band apart. Rogers soon went solo while the rest of the band wanted to continue under the leadership of Gilmour. Under the name Pink Floyd the made two new moderately successful albums "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" (1987), and "The Division Bell" (1994). Rogers did sue the band for rights to the name but settled that they could use it. Their reunion was at the London Live 8 with Waters where a new reunion was hinted a possibility but not a reality.

Instruction:

For the A-chord, just play it normally.

For the D-chord, go to the fifth fret and place your index finger on all of the strings except the E. Then, place your ring finger on the seventh fret and cover the D, G, and B strings. Make sure you do not mute the e string or your sound will be way off.

For the E-chord, do the same thing just on the seventh and ninth frets.

For the chorus, I just like to play the power chords, which is just the base note and the fifth above.

So for the G-chord, put your index finger on the E-string at the third fret and your ring finger on the fifth fret of the A-string. Strum it, but make sure you're only hitting the E-string and the A-string.

Same goes for the A-chord, just start on the fifth fret instead of the third.

Monterey Pop

Though there had been many music festivals before Monterey, Monterey is considered to be the first music festival to ever feature pop and rock music, and therefore became the template for all later pop festivals, including Woodstock. And though Monterey is perpetually overshadowed by its younger brother, Monterey holds advantages over Woodstock in two big areas - it is the older, and therefore the most important of the two, and it was, unlike the rainy and mud-drenched Woodstock, an actual success.

Planned primarily by the Mamas and the Papas, the Beatles, and the Beach Boys, the Monterey Festival featured an incredible range of famous musicians and cannily invited several previously unknown bands that would go on to change music history, such as Big Brother and the Holding Company, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Who, and Otis Redding (backed by Booker T. and the MGs).

Other groups on the star-studded bill included Simon and Garfunkel, Johnny Rivers, the Association, the Animals, Canned Heat, The Butterfield Blues Band, Country Joe and the Fish, the Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, and Grateful Dead.

Also noteworty were the list of bands that didn't show. The Beatles and the Beach Boys planned the festival, but didn't play there - the Beatles had stopped touring and the Beach Boys were on the verge of disintegration. Donovan couldn't get a visa, Dylan wasn't invited, the Rolling Stones' guitarist Brian Jones was in attendance while bandmates Mick Jagger and Keith Richards faced drug charges back in England.

The most interesting act on the bill was an Indian sitarist named Ravi Shankar. The organizers wanted something new and exciting to showcase, and an classical sitarist from India seemed to fit the bill! The only act that was paid at the festival (the nominal sum of $3000), Ravi Shankar launched himself into international stardom with his unbelievable four-hour performance.

Monterey was also broadcast far beyond its live audience because of the decision (unheard of at the time) to film the entire concert. Later, footage from this film was used to create documentaries about the festival like Monterey Pop.

Chuck Berry - The Greatest of all Time

While Elvis might have been more accessible (white), and the Beatles might have sold more records, and Jimi Hendrix might have explored further the realms of guitarmanship, none of it could have been possible without the third son of a middle class Baptist deacon from St. Louis.

Chuck Berry was the prime shaper of nearly every aspect of rock'n'roll: His famous opening guitar riffs in songs like "Johnny B. Goode" and "Roll Over Beethoven" were constantly lifted by more famous white rock'n'roll acts to follow, like the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. Listen closely to all the great riffs of all-time and you can hear the influence of Chuck Berry wailing solos - "Louie Louie" was inspired by Berry's "Havana Moon," and "Come Together" is so much like Chuck Berry that John Lennon was actually sued for copyright infringement.

Berry also was a pioneer in marketing - before Berry rock'n'roll was a fringe act, a simple variation of R&B, something that only blacks listened to or know about. But Berry knew that in order to make it big he would have to appeal to white teenagers, and in doing so influenced the next generation of white musicians who tried hard to imitate his genius. If you hear any rock'n'roll song today that talks about young love, cars, or school, you can thank Chuck Berry, who made those the main subjects of rock.

The Ten Best Compositions to Listen to, to Get Interested in Classical Music

Perhaps the most famous theme in all of classical music, this sympohny opens with with the shocking Da-Da-Da-DAAA! Beethoven commented on this motif, and said it was, "Fate knocking on my door." This rythmic motif continues throughout the entire sympohny.

The first movement is passionate sonata form. After the theme discussed above is played and elaborated on, a second, gentler theme is introduced in the horns. After this the first theme is developed, expanded, and altered. The movement recapitulates with the entire orchestra behind the first theme and breathtaking coda (tail or end). When listening to this movement, think of the pain and anguish that Beethoven suffered. This is angry, heartbroken, and determined Beethoven at his best.

Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto

The Concerto is divided into three movements. The first movement, (Allegro ma non tanto) begins with light timpani and pulsing strings. The piano simply lays out the melody with winds occasionally interjecting. After the piano finishes playing the melody, the orchestra plays the melody while the piano keeps the audience entertained with fast and beutiful elaborations on the d minor triad. There are many high points of the first movement - especially in the powerful cadenza that leads to a short coda and brings the first movement of the concerto to a close.

The Second Movement, (Intermezzo: Adagio), is a doleful lament. It is nearly four full minutes before the piano enters as the orchestral introduction drowns the listener in a nostalgic melencholy. This movement climaxes at the end and leads brilliantly directly into the third movement.

The Third Movement, (Finale: Alla Breva) is a vivacious romp that incorporates modified themes from the first movement that effectively frames the concerto. This movement especially exudes a Russian folk music theme.

The Concerto takes about forty minutes to perform.

This Concerto was written at his family estate. It was premiered with Walter Damrosch. The Second performance was more memorable with Gustav Mahler conducting.

12 Tone Music Made Simple

In traditional music, everything is composed in a certain key - and the key limits what can be done. For example, if you play a C Major scale from middle C up the next octave, you will find that you use none of the black notes on the piano. In fact, if you are playing in the key of C Major, chances are you won't use a single black note. So it is with every key, about half of the twelve tones are used often while the other half is completly ignored.

Arnold Schoenberg, the man behind the music, thought this was unfair. In fact, he thought each note should be used the same number of times. To do this - he invented twelve tone music. He said, If I use a C, I will not use another C anywhere on the piano until I have used an E-flat, and a G, and a C-Sharp, and all eleven other tones of the chromatic scale. One cycle of using all twelve notes is called a tone row.

Now that you can write tone rows, here's what you can do with them:

Once you have a tone row there are two processes you can put it through to generate more music. The first is called Inversion. When you invert a tone row you are reversing the intervals. For example, if you went up a fourth in the original, you go down a fourth on the inverted.

The second tool is called Retrograde. To Retrograde, play the whole tone row backwords, starting from note twelve and proceeding through to note one.

Finally, After you have done these two techniques, you can retrograde AND invert a tone row.

Expressing Your Personality Via Ringtone

How are you feeling today? Are you channeling Rhianna’s Shut Up and Drive, or perhaps Timbaland…Apologize? And of course there’s always the oldie but goodie I Just Called to Say I Love You by Stevie Wonder. What do these songs have in common? They could be your ringtone! With the newest phones available (and even some of the old ones, to be honest) you can set your Video Ringtones to anything you can imagine. So how do you choose?

First, start by going through the music you listen to daily. Is there a song you listen to every time you get in the car? What’s at the top of your most-played list? This might be your best bet for expressing your personality through your ringtone. Pick a few of your favorites from artists and see what they have to offer.

Second, look at a few websites. ITunes music store, MTV, wherever you get your music from- check out what’s new and exciting right now. Be the first to download the ringtone- your claim to fame in a couple months when the song hits #1 on the charts.

Finally- listen up. Have you ever been in the mall or in a restaurant when someone’s phone rang- and although annoying, you thought, “That is a cool ringtone?” Emulation is the highest form of respect. Don’t be afraid to ask, “What’s your ringtone?” If he or she didn’t want attention, she would have left her ring on “Classic Nokia.”

A few words of caution: Don’t forget to consider what you want others to hear. If you love Got Your Money by Ol’ Dirty Bastard (who doesn’t?) you might want to think about how you would play that off if your phone accidentally rang in a job interview.

Also, do you have a song that’s important enough to warrant special occasions only? Do you really want the song you danced to at your wedding play when your grandmother calls you? Sometimes hearing something all day, every day can kill your passion for it. Don’t make your favorite, memorable songs tortuous to listen to.

Many cell phones will actually allow you to choose ringtones or Video Clips for different people. This is incredibly beneficial in a variety of ways. For example, you can know that your roommate is calling without bothering to look. The only reason he calls is to ask if he can eat your food. Better left unanswered. Choose tones specifically for family (Sister Sledge, perhaps?), for your girlfriend or boyfriend, for your best friend, and of course- undesirables. That way you’re not only expressing yourself, you’re expressing how you feel about others.

As with everything- you get points for variety! Change your ringtone often to match the changing seasons, holidays, moods, or trends. You can download them from the web, or use software designed for your phone, usually available through your provider, to make your own ringtones straight from your music library. Daily routines can become monotonous- why not create your own, personalized soundtrack? Just go through free mobile phone ringtones and video sharing.

This special version of A Night Before Christmas was written by Lance Corporal James M. Schmidt in 1986 while he was stationed in Washington, D.C., according to Snopes.com. It was originally printed in "Leatherneck" magazine.

I received the poem in an email. Since it said to pass it on to as many people as possible, I wanted to put it in a place where it would get many views.

An extra special Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of the troops serving the United States of America.

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,

After reading and enjoying the poem, I did a bit of research and found the following at Break the Chain:
The sentiment in this story is timeless and far-reaching. It enjoyed a sizable surge in popularity in 2001 as military action in Afghanistan began just prior to the holidays and continued to be a fast-forwarder in the 2002 and 2003 holiday seasons. In 2004, its appeal was bolstered by a spoken-word recording of it, set to holiday music and played on numerous radio stations nationwide.
Soon after the poem began circulating in 2001, Bruce Lovely, a major in the United States Air Force, stepped forward to take credit. He claimed to have written it in 1993 while stationed in Korea. Unfortunately, Lovely's claims have not held up to scrutiny.
The true origins of this ode go back to December 1991. It was written by Marine Lance Corporal James M. Schmidt and published in Leatherneck magazine. The e-mail version contains some changes from Schmidt's original and Schmidt (or Lovely, for that matter) never requested that it be distributed via e-mail.

If you're like me, you like music, you like playing your guitar and you like bargains. If you're also like me, you hate holiday shopping, holiday crowds, and holiday traffic. And did I mention the cost of gas?

I work with a lot of the guys I jam with, so I can get drum stuff for Michael, bass guitar gear for Russell and keyboards for our keyboard wiz Martin. Everybody likes a guitar strap, instrument cable or an effect pedal in their stocking. And I can find something in just about any price range for the people on my list.

The prices are right in line for the world of music gear. And so far, I've been able to find everything I've wanted.

A Brief History of the iPod

No product quite dominates the market as Apple's iPod. Apple decided to develop the iPod when they looked at the digital music players of the time. They found the music players were either too big to be convient or too small to be useful, and user interfaces that were, "unbelievably awful." The iPod was not developed solely by Apple, but also by a number of other companies.

A bastion to the iPod's success is iTunes. this is a digital legal music store where users can buy individual songs for 99 cents, and the only digital music player the play on is the iPod. Another key to the iPod's success is the frequent relase of updated products. Since 2001, there have been five generations of the iPod, the last two enabling users to put photos, then videos, on their iPod. There are other products that have two generations each which are, the iPod mini, the iPod nano, and the iPod shuffle. On top of all this, on June 29th, Apple is putting out the iPod phone - following the trend of other cell-phone music players before them.

The iPod is also compatible with a number of accessories. Every iPod comes with earbuds, (these however, are fragile and are poor quality). Accessories that users can buy include soft and hard cases, iPod speakers, camera conecter, and many others. Nike and Apple even teamed up to create a pedometer!

How to Write a Song

Songwriting is among the best arts. People write in all different kinds of ways, this is just a way to start, if you are more comfertable writing a different way, go for it! (I only write for piano)

There are two aspects of any song, the lyrics, and the music. There is much debate as to which should be written first, however, I usually write the music first, so I'll start with that.

1. Come up with a good chord progression

I usually do this by messing around on the piano and improvising. It is good to knwo some basic theory for this. There are certain chords that always sound good together. Here are some chord progressions to start with:

aminor>Fmajor>Cmajor>Gmajor

Cmajor>Gmajor>Fmajor>Fmajor

Cmajor>Fmajor>Gmajor

2. Come up with a melody

I do this one of two ways. Either I'll play the chord progression and sing over it until I find a melody that I like, or I'll play the chord progression in my left hand and improvise over it with my right hand until a melody develops.

3. Figure out the style

Do you want a swing base, light sound, full sound, fast paced slow paced, whatever you want, but you gotta think about it!

(You need a different chord progression, melody, and style for the verse and the chorus)

Lyrics:

1. Figure out what you want the song to be about

A good way to do this is write a paragraph about what you're thinking for the song. You should know where you are going with it.

2. Come up with a lyrical hook

This is the phrase in the song that everyone remembers. Hooks are usually the chorus, and they've got to be catchy. Here are some famous hooks: "Let it Be," "Light my Fire," "Dance, Dance," "Hard Day's Night"

3. Write the chorus

The chorus should be catchy, and it should be built around the hook.

4. Write the verses

Consider taking from the paragraph you wrote about the song. THIS IS A FIRST DRAFT! don't be afraid to write because you think it has to be perfect, you'll go back and revise.

5. Write second draft

6. Revise again

7. Revise as many times as you need to

Now fit the music to the lyrics. I always craft my lyrics with the music in mind. For example, based on the melody, I know approxiametly how many syllables per line I am aiming for.
