A perfumed evergreen tree is one of the most stunning Christmas traditions, but the decoration must be conducted with care to prevent a holiday season disaster.
You shouldn't put the tree in a place where it would make it difficult for you to get to an exit. If the tree does catch fire you want to be able to get out.
A perfumed evergreen tree is one of the most stunning Christmas traditions, but the decoration must be conducted with care to prevent a holiday season disaster. A pine tree provides its own fuel in the form of its wood, needles and pine tar. Because of the array of the needles, there is plenty of surface area exposed so there's no shortage of oxygen. Add a little heat from an open flame or some defective wiring in Christmas tree lights and the tree will catch fire instantly.
Preventing such a fire is easy if a few precautions are taken. First, don't buy a tree with brown or brittle needles. If the tree is not going to be set up immediately, it should be left outdoors and sprayed with water each day.
Cut about an inch from the bottom of the trunk before putting the tree in a stand to aid water absorption. The stand should be sturdy and designed so that it will not tip over easily. Water in the stand should be replenished each day.
