Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd was formed in the Stormin' Sixties as an English rock band that played what they wanted. After the decline and exit of key member Syd Barret, and the introduction of member David Gilmour to the group composed of Roger Waters, Rick Wright, and Nick Mason, would be known as Pink Floyd and would sky rocket to success and shape the music industry to how we know it today.

Oh By the Way, Which One's Pink?

During the 60's Pink Floyd was still experimenting with their sound but quickly broke off from the psychadelic scene. By the 70's they had established their sound through carefully crafted keyboard, bass, and guitar harmonies as well a stringing together a series of philosophical lyrics and sounds for the listener's pleasure. They could not be placed in a genre and quicky had a watershed moment due to their collaboration, for it was in 1973 that their album "The Dark Side of the Moon," became a huge hit. It hit #1 on the sales and Pop Charts and stayed there for a whopping 741 weeks, only being removed on a technicality making it the #2 selling album of all time. Songs like "Money," "Us and Them," and "Time" cemented the band as a single making philosphical power house in the music industry and showed the band what success truly was.

Soon after the band decided to make another album called "Wish You Were Here" which became incredibly successful even though it was in the shadow of Dark Side. The album focused on the absence of Syd Barret from their band as well as the absence of humanity in the music industry. The first through "Wish You Were Here" and "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" while the latter is through "Welcome to the Machine" and "Have a Cigar."

Soon after Roger Waters took creative control of the band which manifest itself in the album "Animals" and then in the 1979 rock epic, "The Wall." The album rocketed them to success once again but soon tore the band apart. Rogers soon went solo while the rest of the band wanted to continue under the leadership of Gilmour. Under the name Pink Floyd the made two new moderately successful albums "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" (1987), and "The Division Bell" (1994). Rogers did sue the band for rights to the name but settled that they could use it. Their reunion was at the London Live 8 with Waters where a new reunion was hinted a possibility but not a reality.

Saving Your Sanity at the Airport

Nowadays its almost impossible not to have been on a plane and flown somewhere from an airport. The only drawback to the convenience of the fast sleek jets is the hustle and bustle of the crazy airport that you have to go to in order to get on that plane. One step in there and you can almost feel the agony that everyone else is feeling in that place. How ever will you survive? Well, here are some tips to help you keep cool and make things simpler for you.

Before you Go to the Airport

A key factor to surviving at the big airports is what you do before you go to the airport. Things that you may hate like staying very organized, keeping an itinerary, checking everything twice, and even buying your tickets online at home and printing your boarding pass will save much needed time that you can waste at some over priced coffee shop instead of a slow moving line to get the pass. By buying your tickets online and in advance you can also book your seat so you know where you are going to sit, get a cheap fare, and even get a room at a hotel, all from the convenience of your desktop.

From there you should pack your bags neatly and keep them somewhat light. Most airlines have a 50 pound limit as their bag weight limit and anything over will cost you more than you would like to spend, normally you have to give them ~~your soul~~ at least $50 or more. That being said you can avoid this little dilema and the line leading to the dilema by simply packing all your things in carry on bags if you can. I recommend rolling bags to ease the strain on your back, as well as one back pack.

When the time comes for you to leave your house you should have all your stuff ready to go. It is important that you leave for the airport to get there two hours before your flight leaves, for the airport and airline industry is a slippery devilish one and you don't know when a flight will be early, late, on time, or the lines in the airport will be so slow that you won't even make it to the plane to find out. So leave early and find the quickest route there - the highway isn't always the answer either.

At the Airport

Once you are at the airport you still have a number of things to take care of before you can relax in your well earned seat on the plane. Once you arrive, and if you have bags to check in, see if the line to check in is longer inside or outside. Most airports allow you to check in outside as well and can occasionally save you a hassle. If you followed my advice about carry-on's only then ignore this piece of advice. If you need to check in to get a boarding pass then there are usually lines just for that indoors as well. Finding them should not be that difficult.

From there it's on to security. Security is a huge pain anymore due to all of the threats that have come up since 9/11. The way to survive this mass of people in a fast easy way is to avoid wearing any metal. That should keep you safe from the metal detectors and having to be taken aside. Another way to keep things going quickly is to wear slip on, comfortable shoes to avoid the hassle of tugging them off and stopping to take time and put them on. Get all your things ready as well. Before you get to the trays to dump your stuff in, have it all ready including your liquids under 2oz in a clear plastic bag. Seriously, if you don't put those liquids in that bag you are in for a heap of trouble and wasted time.

After security you should immediately locate your gate and get to it. Once there you can explore the airport and wait to board the plane. I recommend going to the bathroom before you do seeing as having to "conduct your business" on the plane can be a total pain. When you are called for boarding here is a trick of the trade that very few people know - you can get on the plane with any ticket during any borading call no matter what section or row you are in. The flight attendants don't actually look at your ticket when they send it through and if you get caught you can simply say you didn't know what was being called and go again during your turn. This trick normally works, seeing as how I managed to get on a flight with a coach ticket during a first class call to win a bet for coffee, but if it doesn't it's not like they can punish you for trying.

Once you are in your seat you should watch out for snakes.... ON A PLANE!

What to do when you Have Writer's Block

We have all had it. We have all been writing something and then felt the annoying silence where your mind stops streaming out information and all you can do is sit there in front of a blank page or screen and think about how much your situation sucks. Scientists don't consider this to be important enough to make medication for, rather here are some things you can do to alleviate the boredom and get back on the verbal horse.

Some Ways to Get Your Mind Off the Block

Do you have writer's block? Well then don't think it rude of me to offer you some friendly advice of what to do with yourself now. Here are some ways that I have personally gotten rid of my writer's block and I think it will help you too!

1) Get youself something scrumptious to eat. It may sound like a waste of time and you may not even be hungry, but be cramming that tasty food into your "pie hole" you may be inspired by its heavenly taste into writing something useful and interesting.

2) Get up and walk around. Life doesn't revolve around what you are writing about and you won't get punished by taking in some sites. By going outside and just watching the happy little squirels and bunnies be merry you might find a source of inspiration to get right back in and write, that's probably how "Alvin and the Chipmunks" got started.

3) Bang your head against your desk - you know, just to get the juices flowing.

4) If you are not on a deadline with your work you can just stop. I don't just mean take a break but rather stop for the day and give yourself a fresh start the next time you sit down to work. You'll find that if you start anew on a new day you will have the vigor and ideas to continue your work.

5) Write a zestbit about what to do when you have writer's block... oh wait, too late...

6) Read a piece of work similar to what you're writing. It might take your work to a whole new level and let you continue on with your writing. You may even end up stealing some concepts from the previous work but you can just call that inspiration and creative influence ;D.

7) Go nuts. Let out your frustration from the writer's block in a destructive way. Tear up some papers, go beat the living daylight out of a pillow, take a sledgehammer to your desk if you can afford another one, or throw things at the wall while yelling at the top of your lungs in the name of conquering your writer's block!

8) Ask someone for help. People are normally pretty nice about helping you and they might have fun creative ideas of their own to aid you in your writing. If they are hard to crack just tempt them with some shady inspirational credits and you should get your much needed writing advice in no time at all.

If all went well you just smashed your writer's block like you were Mario on your way to save Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser. All video game refferences aside, I hope my bit really helped you. If you have any ideas of your own please feel free to comment about them. You're a Good Man Charlie Brown

Whenever someone picks up a newspaper there is always one page that they have to see. One page that is more important to that person than the entire newspaper, I refering, of course, to the comics. The comics page of the newspaper has funny, dramatic, and satirical cartoons all with the puspose of capturing the reader's imagination. However there is one comic that took it to the next level, one comic that had so many movies, books, and shows about it that there is no way it hasn't touched your life in some way or another. That comic is "Peanuts" by Charles Schulz.

An Overview

"Peanuts" is a comic that follows the lives of a bunch of young children who still have the spark of innocence, a dog that seems to be out of this world, and an eccentric bird. The main character of the series is arguably either the round headed kid named Charlie Brown, who is the bears the brunt of a lack of love, confidence, and a positive image, or Snoopy the imaginative dog , who is a root beer and supper enthusiast, and lives in his own world just as much as the real one.The readers frequently learn lessons of life from Charlie Brown and his hopeless romantic feelings toward the little red haired girl, his questions on life at night, and several religious and social commentaries that one would not expect to come from the mouth of a little kid. Snoopy teaches something different: how to have fun. Through his imagination we get a glimpse of WWI flying aces, the shores of Normandy on D-Day, the dorm of Joe Cool, his hiking trips with a series of little birds, or his supper time happy dances and songs all while providing some sort of tiny lesson spliced into lots of laughs. Other characters such as the blanket carrying Linus offer a more mature character through the irony of carrying a "security blanket," while his sister Lucy provides the angry character of the strip as well as being a devious, football pulling, part of Charlie Brown's psychological relief. Characters like Marcy and Peppermint Patty get into their own shnanigans on their side of town while showing a great love for sports and and problems in school with "D-'s".

The Legacy of Schulz's Creation

Charles created a masterpiece that affected the lives of many people. His comic became the #1 distributed comic in the world being featured in thousands of newspapers world wide is several different languages. Why? Because Schulz had captured the innocence of children while using them for a larger message. His characters had become staples of the cartoon world with Snoopy being the most innovative the world had seen. Schulz had been the first to put an animal on two legs and give it a thought bubble. By giving the dog an imagination and a stylish dance move Schulz had created a timeless classic. Other people realized what he had created. As Peanuts gained popularity, people wanted to do things with the characters. They had been featured on a Ford Motors pamphlet, became toys, and starred in their first movie/tv show that still plays to this day. More shows and movies followed, and more products like toys, coasters, cards, and comic books came soon after. Peanuts became so popular they even got a few video games like "Snoopy Tennis," and eventually a Broadway Musical called "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown," became a smash hit. After suffering from health problems Schulz stopped making new comics in 2000, followed quickly by his death in the same year. However there is still much to remember him and his creations for, like a parade of Snoopy statues around the world, and his good friend Tom Everhart who creates Peanuts paintings. Avoid Fruits and Nuts - You are what You Eat

Everyday I hear, and read, and watch, and am scolded, and am reminded to eat healthy. Everyday there is a new diet that comes out and is the next best way to eat healthy. Well guess what - I am sick of it. Here's a new way to eat healthy know what's bad for you. Wow that sounds so much simpler wouldn't you say?

So here's the deal: we all know you want to eat healthy. People have told you to check the labels and Nutrition facts while shopping in your local grocery store. They are asking you to take another few minutes of your precious time to waste reading numbers and figures while you don't even know what those figures are supposed to be. Is X grams of this too much? Is Z kgs of X combined with this sudofroctalisometalicchocolate going to somehow compromise the well earned weight loss of my diet? Is X grams of this without the 32 gams of Y healthy if I ignore the fact that this is made of 30% of something which I don't care about and have never heard of?

Here's a question: does it taste good? Is the food you are about to eat magically delicious? If the answer to that is yes then you should probably avoid eating the thing that you love so much.

Here's another question: how much food do you typically eat? Is it a lot? Is it more than one plate? Typically more than one plate of something means it's just too darn scrumptious and you just gotta keep on stuffing your face with it. More than one plate of something is usually unhealthy so by golly keep on going back to the buffet line and pile it on.

Okay, I just have to ask you one more thing: do you like sugar? Do you get weak at the knees thinking about the heavenly taste it brings to your tongue in the form of a donut, danish, cruller, lollypop, soft drink, or basic snack? Well if so then might I recommend an unhealthy lifestyle for you. Keep sugar in your diet. Not the sugar that comes from fruit that stuff is beneath you, rather keep up with all those processed sugars for tremendous, no pun intended, results.

I'm sorry for this last question but do you enjoy commercials? Do you enjoy sitting watching tv? Do you sit in front of the tv and get enticed by its commercials into buying things like food? Well if yes then keep on doing that. Hopefully you get manipulated into eating junk from fast food places. Who cares if its bad for you? Its cheap and tasty.

There you go, I have given you some examples of unhealthy ways to eat. If you want to engorge yourself on the unhealthy then be my guest. If you want to continue to eat healthy after my humble suggestions then suit yourself. Good luck with your eating habits!!

How to Rant

Ranting 101: Ranting is the act of spewing out infromation in an angry stream of words that must last for a good long time in order to deliver the full effect of your angry message.

Myth: Anyone can rant if they are angry enough. That is just not true. In order to rant well you need to follow a set regiment that makes rants good. If you don't you might just end up like most people and spit out a bunch of tasteless incoherent sentences that will just wind up getting you some nasty stares and dirty looks.

To rant well one must follow heavily influenced, regimented guidelines.

1) Think of something that annoys you more than anything. It doesn't have to be something big like world hunger, it just has to be something that you really really really don't like.

2) Make sure you know a few things about what you're going to say. It might hurt not to just blow thinking of that angry thought, but think before you speak. If you don't really know anything, or have any experience dealing with the thing that makes you angry you will just end up looking like a fool. Like I might think that foolishly abiding by the trans-capitalist policies of the Chinese foreign markets is going to hurt our economy and depreciate the value of the average consumer's spare change, but other than that heavily worder sentence I don't know much else about the topic. If you don't know anything go back to step one and start again.

3) Start off slow. If you jump right into the rant and just give in to your brewing anger than you will just end up babbling like a crazed loony. By starting off slow you can introduce your audience to what you are mad about and begin to list the faults or terrible traits of that thing you wanna talk about. It also lets you escalate without making people uncomfortable.

4) Don't yell. Yelling instantly increases the tension of your audience and can only hurt the point you are trying to get across. In the case of writing a rant or typing one ALL CAPS WILL ONLY MAKE PEOPLE ANNOYED AND UNCOMFORTABLE, GOT IT?!? See? That was just annoying.

5) Bring in personal experience and humor. By bringing in your personal experience you can relate to your audience and make them think you are just a down to Earth guy that is just a tiny bit ticked off. Using such experiences helps illustrate your point and will be worth your effort, unless of course you choose an off topic story in which case you missed the point completely.

6) Tie everything together and make your point. A rant without a conclusion is like a wedding without a cake. By tieing everything together you will be able to illustrate your point while proving that you aren't just some angry idiot. Hopefully if you illustrate your point well enough you will also sway people into thinking the way you do and make lots of friends with an appropriate rant.

George Carlin

George Carlin (1937-2008) was arguably one of the greatest comedians of all time. He pushed the bounds and limits of comedy with his black humor.

George Carlin was born an Irish Roman Catholic in 1937 in New York City. From there he quickly grew up and explored the realms of comedy with fellow comedian, George Burnes. Eventually, however the two split off after Carlin adopted a more extreme and risky tone in his comedy. His most famous bit, "the Seven Dirty Words" has become a staple of comedy and even influenced the court case F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation where he became a footnote in the court history of this country. He has had several other famous bits, ones that deal with the BS in Western and US culture, and not even religion is spared. Everything from pets, driving your car, and sports were comedic fuel for Carlin. He stared in several of his own comedy specials, released many albums, and guest starred in a vast array of films and television episodes. His appearance in the movie, "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" is particularly noteworthy. In 2008 he was scheduled to recieve the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, however he passed away before the award but was still given the honor, even in death.

What to do with those Old Boxes

Do you have a lot of card board boxes that just sit around and don't do anything? Well instead of letting them collect dust and go unused or throw them away you have a number of things you can do with them!

File like you Never Have Before!

The first thing you can do with your empty boxes is use them. Find any junk or unorganized stack of papers in your house and put them into as many boxes as you can. Don't have anything, or don't have enough shelf or floor space? Not a problem, keep reading to find out what you can do from here.

Give them to Someone

Do you know someone who could use some free filing or storage help? Well then they need not look further than you, with your mighty boxes that will help save the day. You could also just offer people boxes, afterall you don't know what they want with them. They might need them for something really cool. Other people also might know where your boxes should really go. Who knows? Maybe you'll find out your box has helped out some family thousands of miles away in some way or another.

Quick Hide!

If you have some unpaid debts, sworn enemies, or just need to get around in secret there is nothing like a carboard box to help you do the job. For example when trouble comes a knockin' just throw on your box and hide. It's so simple no one expects it and that's the beauty of it! The only drawback is that you need a large box, unless of course you are a proffesional, boneless, Indian guru who does street shows.

Build a Box Fort!

If you did all the steps above and still have a plethora of empty boxes, and an equally large amount of imagination you can do whatever you want with them. However you are reading my bit so you don't need any of that. Here's what you do: build a box fort like none before. Wow your neighbors with its turrets of solid brown, create an outdoor courtyard and watch it melt away and become a soggy mess in the rain, declare war on a neighboring yard only to have your neigbor come back and be powerless before your grand high walls. Still have extra boxes? Use the rest to fashion weapons for the many many soldiers of your fort. Still have extra boxes?!? Well then read on good sir/madam.

Explore the High Seas!

If you have more boxes, which if having done the steps above and having more would be quit impressive, then do what any sane individual would do - dump it in a river or lake and jump on. First you might wanna stuff the box with bubble wrap or floating noodles to ensure some serious buoyancy, but other than that you are ready for an adventure. With a rather large box you can go where ever your heart desires and scoff at the land lubbers eyeing your fancy box. With more cardboard you could even make tiny rafts for mice and other little creatures to race in, or even make your own stylish brown uniforms and safety jackets for your crew and friends. In fact the possibilities are endless!

Just Give up and Recycle...

Tired of having fun? Is it just too much? That's ok just don't throw away your boxes, rather you should recycle them! This will help save the environment and the world's trees. No more tree need to die for our brown buddies and you can make a difference, good job!

Also keep in mind that these are all just guidelines. If you have any ideas of your own, you should do them and tell the world if they are fun! The whole point is to clear away those boxes and have fun doing it.
