In a holiday shopping season already shadowed by recalls of millions of popular toys, parents need to be especially vigilant about toys that may contain lead or small but powerful magnets. Potentially dangerous toys include small jewelry items and toys with small attachments.

Safety First This Christmas

Safety advocates have issued their annual warnings Tuesday about toys that can poison, choke or otherwise injure children.

In a holiday shopping season already shadowed by recalls of millions of popular toys, parents need to be especially vigilant about toys that may contain lead or small but powerful magnets. Potentially dangerous toys include small jewelry items and toys with small attachments.

Safety advocates offer these tips for parents and other toy buyers:

Know the child and how he or she plays. If a child older than 3 still puts things in his or her mouth, stay away from small items.

Be sure to include the safety gear, such as a helmet with a new bicycle.

Check for recalls at www.toysafety.net or with the Consumer Product Safety Commission at www.cpsc.gov or its hot line at 800-638-2772. Report any dangerous toys or injuries to children to the commission or your state Department of Consumer Protection.

Watch out for noisy toys. Loud sound effects could damage hearing if used repeatedly too close to a child's ear.

Aqua Dots, a popular craft kit sold nationwide, was recalled earlier this month when several children fell into comas after swallowing beads it contained. Investigators found the beads were coated with a substance that converted into the so-called date-rape drug, which can induce seizures and amnesia.

The film stars James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, and a number of great character actors. Stewart plays George Bailey, a small-town building-and-loan president who rescues his community from the authoritarianism of a rich and spiteful old man, played by Barrymore. George is nearly brought to bankruptcy, disgrace, and the thought of suicide one Christmas Eve, until an interesting angel named Clarence drops in to show him what Bedford Falls would have been without him.

For me, director Frank Capra made the classic Christmas picture with ``It's A Wonderful Life'' in 1946. Nonetheless there's nothing old-fashioned about the emotion of the movie or its message.

Capra made films that would inspire the down in the dumps hopes of the American public. His best films concern the ability of the everyday guy to seek the virtuous in the face of seemingly undefeatable malevolence and to act resourcefully for the advantage of his fellow humans. With the angel's help, Bailey sees how his building-and-loan made possible a decent standard of living for so many people and encouraged small business, and kept citizens productive and happy and contributors to society.
Despite charges of sentimentality leveled at it, ``Wonderful Life'' satisfies now, as much as it ever did, a public starved for meaning. Its schmaltz can be forgiven, partly because the film is so well made and partly because at its core lies the assumption of a common-ground of meaning among us all and the steel-tough realities of selfless affection. ``It's a Wonderful Life'' is one of the very few films that actually improves with age.

You shouldn't put the tree in a place where it would make it difficult for you to get to an exit. If the tree does catch fire you want to be able to get out.

A pine tree provides its own fuel in the form of its wood, needles and pine tar. Because of the array of the needles, there is plenty of surface area exposed so there's no shortage of oxygen. Add a little heat from an open flame or some defective wiring in Christmas tree lights and the tree will catch fire instantly.
Preventing such a fire is easy if a few precautions are taken. First, don't buy a tree with brown or brittle needles. If the tree is not going to be set up immediately, it should be left outdoors and sprayed with water each day.
Cut about an inch from the bottom of the trunk before putting the tree in a stand to aid water absorption. The stand should be sturdy and designed so that it will not tip over easily. Water in the stand should be replenished each day.

The Norfolk Island Pine is a houseplant that adapts very well as a Christmas tree and continues to be an attractive indoor plant after the holidays.

If you don't already have a Norfolk Island Pine, this holidays season may be the time to buy one. Choose a tree that has a straight trunk with a good balance of horizontal branches. A small tree should come with a stake in the pot to assure that the tree will grow staright.

The branches of a Norfolk Island Pine are soft and bendy; you should only use light weight ornaments. The smallest light bulbs on a strand of fine wire can be carefully draped on the branches; heat from the miniature bulbs will not damage the plant for the brief holiday use. Clear, blown-glass ornaments are relatively expensive, but with a string of clear miniature lights the total effect is an appropriate crystalline iciness. Do not overload the tree or you may burden it and mask its natural symmetry.

After Christmas, place your Norfolk Island Pine where it will have good light, such as an unobstructed north window or a south window during winter. Turn it regularly so it does not become unbalanced from growing toward the light. Norfolk Island Pine prefers a cool environment. The temperature should not be higher than 70 degrees. The needles will turn brown in hot dry air. Keep the soil evenly moist.

In summer, set the tree outside in light shade or on the patio or porch protected from sun and wind. Indoors, move it away from a sunny window to a cool, bright location. Summer is the growing season, so feed the tree with an all-purpose, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer every two or three weeks.

Norfolk Island Pine is a slow grower and probably will not require repotting for two or three years. Thus, you have acquired a perennial Christmas tree which can become part of your own Christmas traditions and still be a satisfying houseplant the rest of the year.

The Italians say Bono Natale; the Spanish Felices Pascuas, and the Mexicans Feliz Navidad. A Lithuanian may bid you Linksmu Kaledu, a Pole Wesolych Swiat. In Sweden it`s God Jul, in France Joyeux Noel, in Greece Kala Christougena. A German might greet you with a hearty Froehliche Weinachten. Whatever the language, though, it all means the same thing.

For many ethnic groups, the highlight of the holiday season occurs on Christmas Eve when the family gathers around the dinner table. In traditional Polish homes, the meal begins with the breaking of the Christmas wafer. The oldest person distributes the pieces as tokens of friendship and peace. This is the time to mend past quarrels. A similar custom exists among Czechoslovakian families. After good wishes are exchanged around the table, the father dips his thumb into a container of honey and makes a cross on the forehead of each child. Others, such as the Greeks, use wine instead of honey.

The food itself varies according to region. The Polish may feature a ruby red borscht soup, baked fish (usually herring), cabbage rolls and a sauerkraut- or cheese-filled pierogi. A popular dish in several Slavic countries is a sweetened wheat or barley cereal with almonds, fruit and honey.

And there are other kinds of food served during typical Christmas Evecdinners. Turkey with roast potatoes, mince pies and plum pudding is a popular English meal; ham is popular in the Swedish-American community; fish, especially fried eel, is a prominent fixture among Italian-Americans. A Mexican holiday meal is often quite elaborate, usually consisting of turkey and tortillas, fried peppers and other vegetables, and a Christmas salad of fruits, nuts, beets and sugar cane. The desserts, mouth-watering all, may include hot chocolate with vanilla and cinnamon or capiritada, a Mexican bread pudding.

The name Santa Claus evolved from Nick's Dutch nickname, Sinter Klaas, a shortened form of Sint Nikolaas (Dutch for Saint Nicholas).

The tale of Santa Claus can be discovered going back many centuries to a monk by the name of St. Nicholas. Historians say that Nicholas was born sometime around 280 A.D. in modern-day Turkey. Famous for his holiness and humanity, St. Nicholas became the subject of many traditions. The tales tell us that he gave away all of his money and traveled the around helping the poor and sick. One of the best known of the St. Nicholas legends is that he saved three poor sisters from being sold by their father by giving them a dowry so that they could get married. >

Over the course of many years, Nicholas became known as the protector of children and sailors. His feast day is celebrated on the anniversary of his death, December 6. This was traditionally considered a lucky day to make large purchases or to get married. By the Renaissance, St. Nicholas was one of the most popular saints in Europe, especially in Holland.

St. Nicholas made his first appearance in America in December 1773, when a New York newspaper reported that groups of Dutch families had gathered to honor the anniversary of his death. The name Santa Claus evolved from Nick's Dutch nickname, Sinter Klaas, a shortened form of Sint Nikolaas (Dutch for Saint Nicholas). In 1804, John Pintard, a member of the New York Historical Society, distributed woodcuts of St. Nicholas at the society's annual meeting. The background of the engraving contains now-familiar Santa images including stockings filled with toys and fruit hung over a fireplace, according to historians.

What the Pilgrims were commemorating was not exactly a "thanksgiving"

Thanksgiving did not begin with the Pilgrims; it was an ancient tradition they would have been familiar with from England. What the Pilgrims were commemorating was not exactly a "thanksgiving," which to them was an opportunity for religious devoutness and somberness, but rather a harvest gala, full of feasting, dancing, singing, sports, and games, which the Pilgrims would have regarded as completely out of place activities for a religious ceremony.

Although contemporaneous descriptions of the first Thanksgiving talk about "wild Turkies," the Pilgrims and Wampanoag probably ate a variety of other fowl, such as geese, ducks, and partridges, and even birds we no longer commonly consider as food, such as cranes, swans, and eagles. Corn on the cob was not on the menu, since Indian corn was all dried out by that time of year, in order to be ground up into meal. The pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce we are all familiar with were absent too, since the Pilgrims had no supply of sugar. The Pilgrims might have made a kind of pudding from boiled pumpkin, however. Potatoes were not common in that area at the time, and though we don't usually connect seafood with Thanksgiving, the Pilgrims most likely would have included cod, eel, clams, lobster, and even seal in their feast.

Due to poor harvests, the pilgrims never celebrated another Thanksgiving. The first time all the states in the U.S. celebrated Thanksgiving together was in 1777, but that was a one-time only affair prompted by the Revolutionary War. Abraham Lincoln established Thanksgiving as a national holiday celebrated on the last Thursday in November in 1863, and Franklin Roosevelt moved it to the fourth Thursday in November in 1939.

A Brief History of Christmas

The origins of Christmas have been hotly debated over the years, as scholars and faithful believers alike have tried to sort through often conflicting evidence to determine how our modern holiday, celebrated on the 25^th of December came to be. There is obviously a mesh of pagan celebrations with early Christian notions of the birth of Jesus, but just how this combination took place remains a topic of dispute.

First off, no one knows for sure what day Jesus was actually born on. Based on the biblical description of the night, many historians believe it was actually sometime in September. So why do we celebrate Christ’s birthday as Christmas, on December the 25th?

In Rome, the Winter Solstice was celebrated for centuries before the advent of Jesus. The Romans called their winter holiday Saturnalia, honoring Saturn, the God of Agriculture. The Romans also held a festival on December 25, the Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, which means the birthday of the unconquered sun. The Sol Invictus festival has a "strong claim on the responsibility" for the date of Christmas, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia. Early Christian writers connected the rebirth of the sun to the birth of Jesus.

In the early years of Christianity, the birth of Jesus was not celebrated. In the fourth century, Pope Julius I chose December 25. It is commonly believed that the church chose this date in an effort to adopt and absorb the traditions of the aforementioned pagan festivals. First called the Feast of the Nativity, the celebration spread to Egypt by 432 and to England by the end of the sixth century. Historians say that by holding Christmas at the same time as the traditional winter solstice festivals, church leaders increased the chances that Christmas would be popularly embraced. By the Middle Ages, Christianity had, for the most part, replaced pagan religion and Christmas was widely celebrated.
