How to Grow Vegetables in a Garden

Growing vegetables in a home garden is not only fulfilling and INCREDIBLY tasty, it also helps on the high cost of vegetable (I think!).

Tomatos, carrots, lettuce, cucumbers, herbs (not to miss purple basil) and more.

It's easy, and in today's environment....a good thing to do!

Preparing the Soil!

Here in Colorado, we are known for clay-ey soils. Not great to work with, but with alittle thought, easily amended to make this great sol to plant. So...how!

Step 1: Add compost to your soil---about 3 inches on top of your normal soil. Yoou can make compaost in yoour own compost bin, buit I've never gotten to that. I just buy bags at the local garden center. (See diagram)

Step 2: Add some slow relase pellet fertilizer - follow the directions on the box.

Step 3: ROTOTILL (but if you have sprinkler systems watch the pipes- don't ask how I know...) I use a lightweight electric version so I don't need to hassle with gas engines. Works like a charm. (See picture)

Step 4: You're ready to plant!

Confusing?

OK so it is. What is time depends on where you are---- And what is distance, you got it...depends on your frame of reference-

This Twist is meant to be the very basic intro to Einstein and to his grand theory of relativity!

First, a note about Al!

Einstein was a failure.

His teachers hated him, he was difficult to manage. Not fun to have in a classroom. In fact, his recommendations from his PHD advisers were, at best, hesitant.

He ended up with a job as a patent clerk, which he loved. Easy work, lots of time to think, and the pay wasn't bad. Then in 1905 everything changed----

FIVE physics shattering articles published in a single year, at the age of 23!

Clearly, it was time for Einstein to thrive. In a course of twelve months, at age 23, in 1905, this patent clerk issued five papers on fairly esoteric items- like Brownian motion, like the basics of relativity. The Physics world stood up and took notice, and the legend of Albert Einstein had begun.

Step 1: Sorry Issac, you're just wrong.....

Al apologizes to Issac Newton, saying, your three laws- you know.... the apple, gravity, acceleration and all that stuff- wonderful but not quite right.

Issac, you gotta think about what happens when you're in a moving object, moving faster and faster, almost to the speed of light....?

Growing Roses

Roses Love Sunshine.....

A sappy song that some folks might know, but it's very true-

So this Twist focuses on where and what Types of roses to plant, how to plant them, how to grow them, and finally, how to harvest- Great fun with roses and time to get growing!

Where and What to Plant!

So, like WHERE?!

As the song says, Roses Love Sunshine (hum along if you'd like)-

The rule is, the more sun the better. My rose garden is facing east, with a reflective white wall behind it. Almost 40 roses, and all of them like being baked! Wherever you can get the most sun, that is the best place for your rose garden.

So like WHAT?!

Various types of roses, including-

Floribunda
Hybrid Tea
Tree roses
Grandeflora

I have grown all of these (except Tree roses, which I think are a bit weird) , with good success. I will detail each of these areas right after a quick review of how to plant!

How to Plant- All you need is Love....:)

Actually, all you need is love and.......

A heck of a shovel and.....

A good back:)

OK....Soil Prep is critical. Roses love fertile, aerated, damp soil, so....

Dig a DEEP BROAD hole, about 2 feet square and 2 feet deep .
Add compost and mix together with the soil...(if you've got clay soil, this is critical)
Fill the hole with water, and let it drain out- can take up to an hour, depending on your soil
Once it drains, mix the soil around so at the bottom of the hole, so its not a solid mass
If you're planting a rose bush that is already potted....if not go to Step 6-

Just take the rose bush out of the pot carefully
Place in the hole - place so the graft line is right at soil level (see diagram)
Fill the hole up with loose soil
Water again - go to step 7

If you're planting a rose bush that is a bare root rose (no soil around the roots)

At the bottom of the hole, build a small hill, about 6 inches high, 4-6 inches in diameter or somesuch
Spread the roots of the bare root rose bush carefully so it extends on the hill- sort of like a spider on a marble - place so the graft line is right at soil line (see diagram)
Fill the hole with loose soil
Water again - go to step 7

Cover the base of the rose with some sort of mulch (chips are fine)
Give it a couple of days, and water again - deep watering, which means a hose running for 5 minutes per plant, at the base of the rose.

Until you've tasted peas straight off the vine, you don't really appreciate the wonders of a home garden. This Twist tells of some of the tricks to make peas grow easily and naturally right where you live!

Soil and Pea Seed Preparation

When to Plant:

As soon as you can work the soil.....like early early early in the spring. The colder, the better- and if it snows after you plant, the peas will love it. Early, and then very late in the fall- Peas don't like heat.

Soil Prep:

Time to cultivate the soil. What does that mean? Add a healthy dose of sheep and peat to the soil, and work it in by basically turning the soil over with a shovel. Let the mixture sit for a couple of days, and you're ready to plant.

Seed Prep:

There's a secret to pea growing, and that is to help the seed in its efforts to fix nitrogen. There is a nitrogen fixing bacteria that you cna buy at any garden center that you use to coat the seeds BEFORE planting. Coat the seeds and then they're ready to go.

Plant those seeds by digging a six inch wide trench, about 2 inches deep. Actually, you're not really digging, it's more like moving the earth with a hoe. Just distribute the seeds randomly in the trench- they should end about maybe an inch or two apart from each other. And let it go- don't go too nuts trying to space anything- really not worth it!

Who's kidding who, if you're able to get the peas from the garden to the kitchen, you haven't grown good enough peas. Frankly, I just pick them and eat them - if you're able to resist, probably time to hang up your hoe.

Growing Tomatos

Nothing like a vine ripe tomato!

Not as hard to grow as you might imagine. This Twist is the basic "How-to" grow tomatos-

Form selection at your garden center, to picking off the vine!

Tomatos: From choosing to picking!

Choosing Tomatos:

First, the source- where can you get your tomato plants? Or even seeds?

I prefer going to a reputable garden center, and planting established plants with varying maturaties. So, I buy plants with maturities ranging from a low of 60 days to fruit, to a high of 80 days to fruit. These plants can be cherry tomatos, grape tomatos, green tomatos, or beefsteak tomatos! They're all great!

Planting Tomatos:

Tomatos love sunshine......adore sunshine! Enough said. Not enough sun, don't expect tomatos. So some rules once you're ready to plant:

Choose a sunny location
Add 3 inches of sheep and peat to your soil location
Turnover the soil, to a depth of 9 to 12 inches
Soil should be nice and soft, aerated----DON'T STEP ON IT!
Make a mound, or a circle, about 18 inches in diameter, 2 inches high
Dig a small hole for the plant, and plant that puppy!
