HOLIDAY GAMES: The College Bowl Season

I don’t see why the NCAA could not craft a playoff system that manages to maintain the current bowl structure.

College Bowl Games are great, don’t get me wrong, but who really doesn’t want to see a playoff in college football? (Besides all those University Presidents at the BCS schools, of course).
I don’t see why the NCAA could not craft a playoff system that manages to maintain the current bowl structure.
If you are planning to tune in or travel to a college bowl game this year, you should know, even though the season is wrapping up, a few of the spots have yet to be finalized, and nothing is ever certain with the crazy math done by the folks at the BCS.
Just as Boise State shocked the world nearly a year ago, don't be too surprised if Hawaii offers a worthy effort in a BCS bowl that's now just one win away. The Broncos — in the aftermath of their season-ending defeat — wouldn't be in any position to argue the point. The boys from Boise would readily agree that Hawaii has the ability to make another WAC fairytale come true.

Last year, the Utah Jazz had a unexpectedly excellent start, getting off to a franchise best 12–1 record, despite injuries. This year, 2007-2008, Jazz fans have been brought back to earth a bit by the less than sensational first few weeks of the season. Still, after the heady days of the playoff run last year, the people of Utah Jazz nation have a good feeling about things!

Last year, Deron Williams demonstrated significant development and ended second in the NBA in assists per game, to Steve Nash. Carlos Boozer was selected to the All-Star Game, but missed with an injury; Mehmet Okur earned a name as a clutch shooter. The team developed a deep roster; in the 10 games that Boozer and Okur (the two leading scorers) missed, the team went 8–2. Paul Millsap became one the biggest surprise rookies of the year.
The Jazz clinched their first playoff berth in four seasons and faced the Houston Rockets. The Jazz lost the first two games in the series but were able to force a seventh game. The first six games of the series were all won by the home team; Utah broke this trend in the seventh game by beating the Rockets.

The Jazz faced the Warriors in the next round. The Warriors had defeated the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks in the previous series. The Jazz eliminated the Warriors in five games to advance to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 1998. They then met the San Antonio Spurs, who had eliminated the Phoenix Suns. The Spurs won the series in five games.

Colorado Rockies!!

Watch out next year – These Rockies are built to last!

The Colorado Rockies put on a late-season and post-season run that will live forever in major league baseball lore. Just look at what this hard-working, leather-slapping bunch of over achievers accomplished late in the season and beyond. In an epic run likely never to be duplicated, the Rox of Colorado came from five games back in mid-September and proceeded to trounce the competition in the National League West.

By the end of the month, they had gone on an amazing stretch of fourteen wins in fifteen games, a feat nobody ever thought they could accomplish. The streak left them tied in first place with the solid San Diego Padres and set up a one-game, do-or-die playoff to see who would take the Wild Card. Not only did the Rox win that important game to move on in to the post season, they did it in incredibly dramatic fashion, coming back against the best closer in the league, in extra innings, and winning on an amazing slide into home by a truly professional baseballer.

Then the amazing season just continued on into the playoffs. First it was a three-game sweep, sans home field advantage, against the once-hot Philadelphia Phillies. The, the Rox swept through their division rivals, the Arizona D-backs. Through it all, as the Rox extended their ridiculous streak to 21 out of 22, they looked completely unstoppable. Although the bats went slightly quiet in the playoffs, the pitching was lights out, and the defense was unflappable.

The Rockies won the pennant! The Rockies won the pennant!

Of course, in the World Series, they faced the juggernaut of the very best team in baseball, and even the Rockies magic was snuffed out by the superiority of the World Champion Red Sox.

But watch out next year – These Rockies are built to last!

Patriots, the Best Football Team Ever??

With their biggest test (the Colts) out of the way, the Patriots are a perfect 9-0 and are just seven games away from a perfect 16-0 regular season. Can they do it? Take a look at each of their final seven opponents.

The Pats will get a week off to prepare before they take on the Bills, who are 4-4 and will face the 0-8 Miami Dolphins in Week 10. The Bills have a talented offense, led by the resurgence of Lee Evans (31 receptions, 16.6 yards/catch) and the emergence of rookie running back Marshawn Lynch (177 carries, 690 yds., 5 TDs). But the Bills are weak on defense (371.0 yds./gm., 29th in NFL) and offense (275.1 yds./gm., 31st in NFL), and New England waxed them 38-7 in Week 3.

The 3-5 Eagles have yet to win two straight games this season, and the Cowboys and Redskins (both Pats victims) beat Philly by a combined 29 points. The offense can move the ball (349.6 yds./gm., ninth in NFL), but the defense gives up an average of 224.5 yards per game through the air, so look for Tom Brady to have a big day.

The Ravens have worked their way to a 4-4 record behind a stifling defense (270.9 yds./gm., third-best in NFL). But their offense is more pedestrian (298.9 yds./gm., 23rd) and they have scored just 131 points, less than Oakland or Miami. If the Ravens hope to stay in this game, they'll have to hold the powerful Patriots offense in check, which will be tough, considering the Steelers burned them for 38 points.

The Steelers are 6-2 behind a dominant defense (237.8 yds./gm., 12.3 pts./gm., both best in NFL) and a strong offense (352.4 yds./gm., eighth-best in NFL; 27.8 pts./gm., fifth-best in NFL). Their Week 9 trouncing of the Ravens proved that they can put up points against a great defense. But they have beaten just one team with a record above .500 (Cleveland in Week 1). Are the Steelers as good as they look, or have they fattened up on weak competition?

It has been a rough season for the Jets, who are 1-8 and in a state of turmoil. Chad Pennington was benched, but his 87.5 QB rating far surpasses that of replacement Kellen Clemens (59.3 in four games, 78.1 against Redskins). Thomas Jones has rushed for 606 yards (10th in the NFL), but he has yet to find the end zone. The Jets give up 380.2 yards per game on defense, and can only muster 290.2 of their own. Look for Bill Belichick to deliver a heaping helping of revenge against Eric Mangini.

As bad as the Jets have been, the Dolphins have been worse. At 0-8 and with no easy wins on the schedule, they could be headed for a historically bad season. It doesn't help that bellwether RB Ronnie Brown (602 yds., four rushing TDs) is out for the year, nor that their defense gives up 31.5 points per game, worst in the league. The Patriots may add to their 49-28 pounding in Week 7.

The Patriots close out the regular season on the road against the resurgent Giants, who have won six straight. The Giants give up just 296.1 yards per game, seventh-best in the NFL, and they have a respectable offense. But only one of their wins has come against a team with a record above .500 (Washington, 24-17 in Week 3). Are the Giants posers, or do they pose a threat? Will Belichick pull out all the stops if a perfect 16-0 season is on the line?

Christmas List Anybody? HALO III!

All I want is HALO III

HALO III is just about everything that Madgamer was dying for, waiting for, hoping for. It looks smooth, it plays flawlessly, and the storyline is so creative and finally fills in the gaps of the earlier episodes. People are going crazy for this game and rightfully so, and it is sure to end up on a lot of Christmas list this holiday season which, in the spirit of peace and goodwill, will have throngs clamoring for another chance to smash some more Brutes into the dust.

HALO III is without a doubt the very best game of the series, and in Madgamer’s humble opinion it’s the best shooter game made for the Xbox 360. The single-player game is excellent, but the multiplayer versions are out of this world! Anybody who liked any of the earlier HALO games is going to go mad for the cutting-edge technology in HALO III.

The campaign in HALO III is unimaginably excellent. New weapons, vehicles, and enemies...and even an incredibly realistic A.I.

So often the fields of battle in Halo 3 take place on hillsides or near cliffs. Even indoors, you can often hop atop boxes, or climb a ramp or stairs to a second level. Gain the high ground whenever possible and you'll have a much easier time dispatching enemies and avoiding return fire.

Brutes First
Your primary focus in combat should be to pick off the most powerful enemies first. Usually, this means Brutes. Because Brutes tend to travel in packs, save your grenades and even rocket launcher fire for clearing out entire packs of these formidable opponents. The level design may also assist here. Look closely for exploding canisters near any tight-knit group of enemies.

Run 'em Over
Of course, a well-trained marine can dish out mayhem and death with the rear-mounted chain gun, but don't dismiss the devastation you can cause by simply running over your enemies. Entire camps of Covenant baddies can be cleared in a hurry, whether you're piloting a Warthog, Ghost, Brute Chopper, or even the slower moving Spectre.

Smack Em'… Unless
Melee strikes have always been a staple of the Halo games and Halo 3 is no exception. You can still find great success with one-hit kills when rifle-butting an enemy from behind. That said, you may want to rely a touch less on melee attacks as you do battle with the enormously powerful Brutes. There's more thunder in their fists than even Master Chief's, so watch out.

'Nade Tactics
Proper grenade use is always helpful, but on Hard or Legendary difficulty, it's critical.

Frag: Use these standard-issue grenades for long-distance throws. Unlike their plasma counterparts, these grenades roll after hitting the ground.
Plasma: The plasma grenade's greatest strength is its ability to stick to its target, so use these only when you're close enough for an accurate throw.
Spike: While the spike grenades don't travel as far, they do have a shorter fuse. Launch one at the feet of a group of enemies. They won't have time to flee outside the blast radius.

Wow! With so many great costumes available nowadays, where was this stuff when I was a kid!

Halloween -- Things have sure changed!

Back when Madgamer was a kid, Halloween costumes were a lot simpler. I remember dressing one year as a cowboy, the next as a “hobo,” and the next year I was a vampire. Every one of those costumes I wore as a kid seemed to be made out of clothing and other materials that we already had. Or, maybe it took a fifty-cent pair of plastic fangs and some fake blood. But I do not recall heading to a store for an intricate costume the likes of which can be found today.

Not that it wouldn’t have been great! I think that I would have loved dressing up in some of the great costumes available nowadays. I mean just check out some of the costumes that are available in 2007:

For kids there are full-size Darth Vader costumes that come complete with a light saber and black boots. Or the little ones can go dressed as Belle from the great Disney movie in a dress that might be seen on the red carpets of Hollywood. And, of course, this year perhaps the most popular costume is going to be based on another Disney venture: The Pirates of the Caribbean. I mean, what little boy won’t want to become Captain Jack Sparrow for Halloween?

And there’s even all kinds of costumes out there for adults who want to dress-up for Halloween. The women can go as Betty Boop, a corpse bride, or even a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader. And meanwhile, all the grown-up little boys can still dress up like Captain Jack!

Halloween is one of the greatest times of year, in my mind, and it's not ONLY because of all the candy.

I Love Halloween

Halloween is a great time of year, with so many opportunities for so many good times. I love it – not only because I get to cram candy into my face without abandon – but because it is just so much fun to decorate and entertain with the intent to frighten. But have you ever stopped to wonder just how Halloween came to be. After all, it’s not exactly “normal” to for adults to dress-up as devils, werewolves or other creatures of the night – is it? How did this holiday work its way into our subconscious anyway, that we all seem to love it so much?

Some Interesting Halloween Facts:

The Celts believed that souls of the dead visited the earth every October 31.
All Hallows Eve was the evening before All Saints Day which is celebrated on November 1.
In Mexico, they celebrate El Dia de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead starting the evening of October 31.
Halloween also marks the end of harvest season. The end of October marks the time that pastures and fields dry up. The animals were brought in from the pasture to be butchered and the remaining vegetables left in fields and gardens were left to rot. This part of the season often brought about reminisce of loved ones that were lost.
In 1800's people started to have parties. Part of the celebrations included costumes, fortune telling and games such as bobbing for apples.
At the turn of the century, cities were overcrowded and Halloween marked the time to let off steam by playing practical jokes such as turning over out houses. By the 1930's things had gotten out of hand and serious damage was being done on Halloween. There was a movement to have children go door to door and ask for candy as an alternative to vandalism.

Turn your pad into a haunted house this Halloween, and make it extra-creepy for all the ghouls and goblins who'll be coming around demanding goodies!

Haunted Decorations

It’s transfiguration time! Time to transform your boring domicile into a haunted house of horrors for the Halloween holiday season. Think of all the little ghosts, witches, goblins and other trick-r-treaters who are coming your way on the 31^st. Want to scare the bejeepers out of them? Or do you just want to make your place the coolest, creepiest on the block? Here are some of my Halloweeniest ideas, (with help from the Internet).

Monster Footprints
Draw a footprint in a big sponge and cut it out. Then, pour washable paint in a pan and press the sponge in the paint. Sponge footsteps up your sidewalk to your front door for trick-r-treaters to follow. Flip the sponge upside down to stamp the other foot. This is especially cool with fluorescent paint and a black light.

Cobwebs
Cut string into 4 foot lengths and tape them to the ceiling of your porch. Throughout the night, hold a bowl of water up to the string to get it, and keep it, wet. When people walk past, the slimy string will brush across their foreheads and scare them!

Body Parts
This is a fun set up to your porch, assuming it is large enough and spookily lit. This could also be set up on the sidewalk leading to your house. Fill bowls with body parts and have trick-r-treaters reach in and be disgusted. Cut up a bunch of hot dogs lengthwise for severed fingers. Cook some spaghetti noodles for veins or guts. A bunch of grapes rolling around in a bowl of oil feels like eyeballs. Fill a balloon with warm water and spread it with strawberry jam. Invite your guests to touch your brain!
