Halloween comes but once a year right? Take full advantage of this Halloween by haunting up a party for your friends and neighbors! Check out the following Twist to get some awesome decorating ideas and my favorite Halloween Punch of all time!

Decorations 1-13...

Everyone loves a house decorated for Halloween. Decorating for the holiday is both fun and easy – if you do it right and keep it simple. The easiest of decorations truly go a long way. Here is a checklist to make sure you have the scariest haunted house on the block!

1) Black Streamers – Leave no ceiling untouched!

2) Fake Spider Webs – Get these at any craft store, they are super easy to put up and really neat…cheap too. Scatter with plastic black spiders

3) Cardboard Graves (lots with R.I.P) paint cardboard grey stand up with ply wood

4) Bowls of candy corn, everywhere and anywhere

5) Corn husks, if you live by a farm great! If not you should be able to find some at craft stores

6) Lots of Jack-O-Lanterns (DUH)

7) White sheets over all furniture for a cool and creepy effect

8) Bug/Spider confetti for any and all surfaces (assuming you have a good vacume)

9) Caution tape around your front door

10) Orange Christmas lights… should be all over the place great way to enter a room. Easy to find this time of year

11) ‘13’ cut out black paper and paste ‘13’ on front door or 666...your choice

12) Black lights in at least some light bulbs (your friends’ costumes will look even cooler)

13) Dry ice in the punch bowl, pretty much a must for Halloween!

Frozen Hand. Take a plastic or latex glove and fill with water, make sure punch is SUPER cold before you stick hand in or it will melt right away (unfortunately it will still melt quickly but worth it the initial presentation).

Frozen Grapes: Eye Balls that keep things cool!

Dry Ice. Keep that sucker misting all night with a block of dry ice in the bottom of your punch, it doesn’t take much and it’s a super cool effect!

Gummy Worms. Freeze in ice cubes or just serve at the bottom of clear cups, yum!

Skiers and Snowboarders have squabbled over which winter sport dominates for over two decades. Each side has its benefits and both are addictive, thrilling and fun; providing some much needed recreation in the cold winter months. So which one reins king of the mountain and if you haven’t tried either, which one’s for you? – This Twist will provide some insight into this long-standing debate.

Skiing and Snowboarding have been plotted against each other in a battle of good vs. evil. Every skier and snowboarder has experienced some form of mountain tension; lift line heckling is an eminent part of both sports. Most people have a reason for not liking the other but in my experience the reason is never very good. So why the tension?

Boarders are often regarded as punks who fail to abide by right-of-way rules and often lose control of their speed. Skiers on the other hand are known to wear hot pink snow pants still and have trouble looking cool wobbling around in awkward plastic boots. Is any of this true? To a certain extent some of this may be true but certainly not of everyone. Chalk the tension up to the mere fact that Skiing and Riding appeals to different people. A prime example is in regards to the different sports' heroes; Skiers are more traditionally measured by speed (Peekaboo Street) whereas snowboarders are measured by Jumps (Shaun White). The gap is getting smaller and smaller with more Skiers riding Park and Boarding becoming an Olympic sport. There is a generational element that added to the fundamental difference.

Some Key Differences

Many boarders and skiers alike would agree that the only thing similar about the two sports is that they both are down hill and require snow. When it comes to your body, skiing isn’t known to be kind on your knees. When you lose control, it’s a lot harder to keep track of your legs when they’re not tied together and a day of moguls can be killer. On the other had boarding can be especially hard on your butt more than ever when you’re just beginning; stopping is difficult to control and your balance will fail you often. It is also much harder on your wrists for the same reason. A blessing and a curse is a skier’s poles. One benefit is it serves as a balancing mechanism to keep you in control and a fantastic tool to scoot you along when it’s flat. The curse is that you have to carry them wherever you go; carrying both poles and skis in ski boots nonetheless is a pain - They are also always the first thing you’ll forget! Boarders often get stranded and have to walk when the terrain fails them by getting flat, if it were up to me, I’d take the poles. Skis handle better in icy conditions and bumps (moguls) whereas snowboards cut through powder gracefully and easily.

In a completely and utterly biased opinion I believe skiing requires a certain physique that snowboarding just can't match...

My favorite place to Ski: Steamboat Springs (Colorado) known for their champagne powder and super long runs. You’ll hardly ever wait in line and you truly can’t beat the snow.

My favorite place to Ride: Mary Jane (Colorado) with an altitude of 11,000 feet, Mary Jane gets more snow then any other Colorado mountain, you can’t find Bowls better than Mary’s, and I mean the Mountain kind.

History of the Ski

The oldest known ski dates back to 2500! Original skis were not exactly used for recreation but as a mode of transportation during long winters in a more cross-country fashion. Skiing has strong Scandinavian roots and they turned this winter necessity into a sport in the early 1700’s. In 1850 downhill skiing became possible when Norwegian, Sondre Norheim developed bindings that would prevent a persons skis from falling off. In the early 1900’s Europeans started catching onto the trend and the activity became more and more popular.

History of the Board

Snowboarding didn’t gain popularity until the 70’s but began when Sherman Poppen made a toy for his children by hooking 2 skis together. Surfer Dimitrije Milovich developed the first official Snowboard it became an official sport in 1985. Originally only 7% of ski areas allowed snowboarding in Europe and America alike mostly because boards were a little on the unpredictable side. With improved equipment and a major popularity shift, over 97% of resorts allow boarders to ride the slopes if not cater to them. Now an Olympic sport, whatever Snowboarding lacks in history, it certainly makes up for it in growing popularity.

Safety Tips On the Slope

· Remember to give other snowboarders and skiers the right of way when going downhill. You may be able to see them, however can they see you?

· When stopping on a run make sure you keep to the sides.

· Whenever crossing or first entering a run look both ways and up the slope before moving off.

· Always use some kind of safety device to prevent runaway equipment.
Never, ever snowboard or ski alone.

· Avoid closed trails and out-of-bound areas. Posted signs and rules should be obeyed at all times. Listen to the local experts or you might end up in a frozen creek.

· Wear a Helmet - you won’t look cool smashed up against a tree, promise.

The Canadian Tuxedo – Mixed Denim

A childhood friend of mine was convinced that she was going to name her poor children Denim and Lace, yikes. I’m sure she’s moved onto naming those future rug rats after more sophisticated fabrics but we can learn a little lesson – Don’t ever Mix Denim and Lace, and even more so, DON’T Ever MIX DENIM. There is nothing that makes my eyes madder than seeing mixed denim because no matter how cute the style of the clothes, it simply doesn’t match. As a rule of thumb, avoid too much of any denim at all costs. Match your cute jeans jacket with a pair of Kaki pants. Don’t buy jeans that have different denim as the pocket. Run far, far away from the Canadian Tuxedo!

Nerd Alert - Sandals and Socks

Maybe the biggest fashion No No of summer is the Sandals and Socks rule. No matter how cool you think those Tevas are, they don’t go with socks, period. Wearing socks with your Sandals really defeats the purpose and more importantly, well, it looks like crap. If you’re nervous about showing your feet avoid sandals all together, if you need to wear socks at work wear a shoe that covers your feet. I hate to say it but the combination is a certified Nerd Alert…Use sandals right and no one gets hurt!

The Mother of all Clashes - Navy Blue & Black

Both Navy Blue and Black are neutral colors and both go with a lot of different colors; what they don’t go with are each other. Mixing navy blue and black is a major fashion mistake. In some lights you may find it hard to differentiate the two but get out in the sun and the clash is noticeable, noticeable and very bad. Mediterranean Apps

When all the Mediterranean influences come together you get some truly amazing and unique cuisine. Make your own delicious treats and entertain guests with some exotic flair. This guide will have you concocting a combination savory and delicious dips and appetizers for your next party! All recipes yield 6 or so servings

The Basics:

Similar combinations of simple ingredients available just about everywhere are used in Mediterranean cooking. This makes it super easy for you to take a crack at it. These basic ingredients are Yogurt, Cucumber, Chick Peas, Tomatoes, Nuts, Tahini (sesame paste), Parsley, Mint, Garlic, Lemons, Onions, Cheese, and Eggplant. Have a few of these on hand and you will be able to whip up something delicious up very quickly!

Hummus:

I’m a huge fan of hummus, for years I bought it at the store until I realized how much better it is (not to mention cheaper) to make it at home yourself. Hummus is extremely simple and makes an excellent appetizer served with pita or accompaniment to any Middle Eastern Dish.

Simple Hummus:

1-2 lemons (juiced)

2 cloves of garlic (finely chopped)

1 can of chickpeas (puréed)

1/3 cup of tahini

Salt (o taste)

Simply mix these ingredients together to have the starting of the best hummus you’ve ever had. If your hummus is dry and not mixing well add water, or olive oil to get it moving. You may also look for pre-mashed chickpeas available at specialty stores.

Hummus Garnish:

Olive Oil (drizzle on top)

Lemon Slice (sliver)

2 tablespoons fresh parsley

Place lemon slice on the side of the dish, drizzle a little oil (no more than) on top to taste and sprinkle with parsley.

Take that Hummus a step further by adding one of a combination of the following: toasted pine nuts, puréed roasted red peppers, roasted garlic, hot sauce or chili oil, cayenne pepper, chopped artichokes or finely chopped Greek olives. For something completely different (and not Middle Eastern at all) try chopped cilantro and jalapeño, yum!

Baba Ghanoush:

Check out how easy this is, use the same ingredients and preparation methods as in the Simple Hummus and Hummus Garnish but use eggplant instead of chickpeas! At many specialty stores you can find canned eggplant all pureed and ready to go but if you start from scratch here’s how to do it:

Cut 1 large eggplant in half the long way and cook under broiler for about 20-30 min or until skin is black. Scoop out the eggplant into a bowl and place in refrigerator until cooled. When done, purée with other ingedients and serve with pita.

Tzatziki Sauce:

Tzatziki is not only fun to say but makes for a fantastic dip or addition to falafel or served with vegetables and you have the perfect and simple starter!

2 containers of plain yogurt

2 small cucumbers unpeeled, seeded and diced

3 cloves of garlic

1 tablespoon of olive oil

½ lemon (juiced)

½ teaspoon of lemon zest

Salt and pepper to taste

1 tablespoon of chopped fresh mint or dill

Blend all ingredients in a blender or food processor and refiderate for 1 hour

Israeli Couscous Salad:

If you haven’t fallen in love with Israeli couscous, you will! This pasta like grain is a delicious base for some truly amazing salads like this one:

4 tablespoons olive oil

3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1 pound of Israeli couscous

3 cups of vegetable stock

3 tablespoons of red wine vinegar

3 tablespoons olive oil

2 lemons (juiced)

Salt and Pepper (to taste)

½ cup of chopped mint leaves

¼ cup of chopped dates

¼ cup toasted pinenuts

1 tablespoon honey

In a large saucepan, heat 3 tablespoons olive oil and add garlic, cook until lightly browned. Add the couscous and cook for 5 minutes (it will be light brown) add stock and half the lemon juice and cook at a reduced simmer. Keep covered until couscous is cooked through but still firm about 8 minutes. Drain the cook couscous and in a bowl toss with all remaining ingredients. Cool in fridge for about an hour and serve!

I Hear NPR

Oh National Public Radio, there isn’t a better news source as far as I can see. 800 stations operate commercial-free and serve up 130 hours of original programming each and every week. Stations serve their local audiences and inform our nation about the happenings of the world like few forms of media do these days. Because they are not-for-profit they are not-for-sale which makes NPR one of the least biased forms of news out there. There is no other place that competes with the combination of news, original music, movies, books and gives their listeners access to dozens of other unique features and pieces online and onair? I hear NPR and what's more, I heart NPR; does this make me a dork or what? Here are some programs and people that make it so great…

All Things Considered

Probably my personal fav, the All Things Considered’s catchy tune that leads up to the program is tattooed in my brain as is the voices of Michele Norris, Robert Siegel and Melissa Block. The show has been aired since the spring of 1971 and provides news with in-depth reporting including interviews with a variety of sources and viewpoints. The featured stories are as many times unique as they are serious but the program never dwells on an issue just gives its audience the facts - usually in a way you haven’t heard. “The determination to get the day’s big stories on the air, and to bring them alive through sound and vioice” says the shows program description.

This I Believe

Not to be missed is the three-minute essay series on All Things Considered entitled ‘This I Believe’. Here is part of the original message that the program based it's segment on – the 1950’s program with the same name:

“This I Believe. By that name, we present the personal philosophies of thoughtful men and women in all walks of life. In this brief space, a banker or a butcher, a painter or a social worker, people of all kinds who need have nothing more in common than integrity, a real honesty, will write about the rules they live by, the things they have found to be the basic values in their lives.”

Morning Edition

Monday through Friday, NPR’s Morning Edition has been as much apart of many American’s morning routine as coffee is for over 20 years now. Correspondents are in 19 location in the United States and based 14 countries worldwide. The program makes for an informed commute; the show has a mere 13 million listeners and draws public radio’s largest audience.

Steve Inskeep

Steve Inskeep a co-host on Morning Edition with Renée Montagne is one of NPR’s most famous reporters and my personal favorite. Inskeep has been reporting the news full-time since 1996 and has since interviewed coved major stories which have taken him from New Orleans to Baghdad during the most trying of times. “He has questioned Presidential candidates, warlords, authors, and musicians. He also interviews people who otherwise would be overlooked: a steelworker, a school board member, the mother of a soldier killed in war.” He has been with the program morning addition since ’04. A Prairie Home Companion

My parents have been listening to A Prairie Home Companion since I was a kid and I now have an instilled weakness for this heart warming program too. every Saturday night the show airs live on many public radio stations about the country and features music, comedy sketches, and of course “News From Lake Wobegon”. The host of the show Garrison Keillor is an entertainment geneous - it is the show’s 32^nd year in production. Because radio shows are so few and far between these days the creativity and classic nature of this one makes it a true radio gem.
