Wine Tasting in California's Central Coast

If you've never gone wine tasting before, California's Central Coast is a wonderful area to start. There is a multitude of great wineries in the area and unlike Napa or Sonoma, they offer a level of warmth and casualness that I believe is somewhat lost in Northern California. For one, the price is right - most offering tastings in the $5 to $10 range depending on the vintages you wish to sample, and some wineries even offer tastings for free! Compared to the costly (upwards of $20 for a tasting), the Central Coast is a bargain especially when it's common to hit 4-6 wineries in a day! That money is better spent on a wine to take home and enjoy.

Paso Robles

The Paso Robles Wine Country is one of the fastest growing vineyard and winery regions in California with the number of wineries in the area more than doubling from 1993 and now. Over 25 different varieties of grapes are grown near Paso Robles and there are over 100 wineries.

Every year in March, the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance (a non-profit organization dedicated to promotion and education of the area's wine country) hosts the Zinfandel Festival, during which Zinfandel makers and enthusiasts come together for a night of wine (of course...), food and celebration of the state's heritage varietal.

Each year in May, Paso Robles holds an annual Wine Festival which attracts visitors from all over the state, and features wines from nearly all of the over 100 local wineries as well as local cuisine.

Caterhams - quick & fun!

Pronounced "KAYTER-UM". Caterham Cars, U.K. has been associated with Lotus, and the Seven in particular, since 1959. Caterham became the sole distributor of the Seven in 1967, and in 1973, bought the exclusive production rights for the Seven from Lotus. At that time Caterham reverted to the popular Series 3 style. In the years since, Caterham’s engineers have continuously developed the Seven to keep abreast of modern technology, while maintaining the timeless, classic appeal.

Did I say quick...?

In June of 2004, Automobile Magazine tested a street legal Caterham Seven Classis with the Superlight package powered by a stock Ford SVT engine at the challenging Barber Motorsport Park track. The Caterham was pitted against some of the quickest street machines available and was once again able to prove that the Seven is the ultimate car on the track or the road.

With a lap time of 1:41.7, the Caterham out lapped the:

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution RS by 6.5 seconds
Lotus Elise by 5.2 seconds
Dodge Viper SRT-10 by 3.6 seconds

What a great looking car

The Caterham Seven is a small, lightweight, two-seater sports car renowned for its performance and handling. Various other manufacturers offer a similar lightweight, minimalist package in a seven-esque shape, but Caterham own various legal rights around the design, manufacturer and name of the original car and have taken legal action in the past in order to protect those rights. The modern Seven is based on the Series 3 Lotus Seven, though Caterham have developed it to the point that no part is the same as on the original Lotus.

Built for Speed

The Lotus 7 was conceived by Chapman as a car to be raced. Whilst still a prototype, in September 1957, it was raced at the Brighton Speed Trials and by the end of 1958 Graham Hill was winning races with the Coventry Climax-engined 'Super Seven'. The car has had a strong racing history throughout its life under both Lotus and Caterham stewardship.

After dominating open class races for decades Caterham Super 7 Racing, a one-make championship for Caterhams, was begun in 1986. Caterham 7 races have since expanded to include club and competitive races in the United Kingdom, continental Europe, Canada, the United States and Asia. In 1995 the Caterham Academy, a novices-only format, was introduced in the UK. For £16,995 (2007 price), entrants get a modified Roadsport kit (although a factory-built option is available for extra cost) with a sealed 120bhp engine and 5-speed gearbox. Having completed the ARDS license qualification, the season then consists of four sprints followed by four circuit races. The Academy is designed as the first step in a well-established chain of Caterham race formats (Graduates, Super Grads, Roadsports, Caterham Challenge and then on to European circuit formats).

The car was banned from racing in the USA in the 1960s, as being "Too fast to race" and again in the UK in the 1970s for the same reasons, which prompted Caterham Cars boss Graham Nearn to produce 'T' shirts with "Caterham Seven, the car that's "Too Fast to Race. .." .Both bans were later lifted. In 2002 an R400 won its class (and came 11th overall out of 200 starters) at the Nürburgring 24-hour race by 10 laps, ahead of competition that included Porsche and BMW racecars, leading, once again, to a ban on entry in subsequent years.

Big Love (Great Danes)

With it's giant size and extremely gentle temperment, Great Danes are commonly known as "Gentle Giants". Second in height only to the Irish Wolfhound, the Great Dane is one of the largest dogs known. Amazingly, even with their size and power they are gentle and reserved. Tall, muscular, and surprisingly graceful, the Great Dane is a real attention-getter. A walk at the park, or down the street will garner attention from many strangers. My Dane likes to hold onto her leash as we take our walks -- which is usually met with responses such as "Who's walking who?" Some other common questions are: "Is that a horse?", "Where's the saddle?", "How much does she eat?". To the last question I typically reply, "as much as she wants!" Most Danes enjoy all the attention they can get and usually lean against his or her visiting admirers. To me, if a Dane leans on you -- he/she likes you!

The Dane Home

Great Danes thrive as a family member, always up and alert participating in the families day-to-day routine. Their needs are few: love, food, a soft spot to lie, exercise, another soft spot to lie. Great Dane bonds closely with its human companions, is energetic outdoors and requires minimal exercise. They like some time outdoors (usually with human companions nearby) a few times a day and then back inside to watch TV or lay in a sunny window. It seems surprising to most, but Danes can be some of the best apartment dogs because of their mellow nature.

Being such a tall dog, a Great Dane can easily clear counter tops of any food or morsels if left unattended. Young Danes have a hard time controlling their tail which can easily clear coffee tables of their contents. But with some guidance and love, your Dane will soon learn house rules and be very mellow, lazy when in the house.

It is said that Great Danes seldom bark, usually they emit a low rumble when spooked or alerted. My Dane, probably due to a mistake in my training, is fiercely protective of me and will bark at any passerby she notices. Though the bark is intimidating, Danes will accept strangers in the home by sensing if a visitor is okay with its owner. Sensitive to moods, Danes have been known to scurry off to another room during a quarrel or will show great remorse when it knows it broke a house rule. The Great Dane breed dog is very attentive and aware of every situation.

When living amongst a family, the Great Dane will quickly learn the day to day life and what is normal. If something is threatening, odd, or out of the ordinary, they will become alert, focused and protective. It is said that a Great Dane is capable of ferociously protecting its loved ones as a powerful, fierce defender that will give its life in a fight should it come to that.
