How to Tie a Tie

If you are like most men, you may not pay much attention to your ties. You might think that because you know how to tie a tie, you know everything you need to about neckties. Maybe you think “a tie is just a tie,” but tell that to the account executive, whose first impression of you might actually be of your necktie. Whether you want to believe it or not, in everyday life we do form our opinions of others by the clothes they choose to wear. And for a man who finds himself in all kinds of everyday situations, it is the necktie, as well as his necktie knots, more than anything else, that will determine how others view his status, confidence, personality and credibility. Here is a diagram and instructions on how to tie the simple and common windsor knot.

Step 1 Drape the tie over your neck, with the wide end of the tie on your right. The wide end should hang about a foot or so lower than the narrow end.

Step 2 Cross the wide end over the narrow end and bring the wide end up and through the inside of the loop around your neck.

Step 3 Bring the wide end back down, around and behind the narrow end.

Steps 4 & 5 Pull the wide end up on your right, then put down through loop and across the narrow end.

Steps 6 & 7 Turn and pass up through the loop around your neck.

Step 8 Complete the knot by pushing the wide end down through the front of the knot.

Step 9 Tighten the knot carefully as you flatten out any wrinkles.

Step 10 Draw the knot snugly up to your collar.

There are many other types of knots to choose from. From the traditional half-windsor and bow tie, to the lesser known St. Andrew knot and Grantchester knot. For the visual learners out there, it helps to see the work being done.
