The Internet has changed everything. And right along with the transformations that have swept the globe with the advent of the World Wide Web, it has changed the way we go to college.
Nowadays, even “traditional” students – meaning those that spend their time on a campus in the real world – couldn’t survive without the Internet for e-mail, research and even submitting assignments to their professors. Meanwhile, the number of non-traditional, “cyber students” has skyrocketed, as major universities from all over the country now offer online programs – called “distance education” – for associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
But what can you expect from an online course of study? Will your degree mean as much as one earned in a bricks-and-mortar classroom? Most importantly, will an online degree get you a first-rate job?
Cyber students, it turns out, do a good job landing great careers, according to a recent survey by the Distance Education and Training Council, a non-profit accreditation agency. An incredible 100 percent of employers who responded felt that graduates performed better on the job as a result of their online degree (as compared to their previous performance). Employers also said that an employee who had received a degree over the Internet compared favorably, in terms of skills and ability, to someone with a “traditional” degree.
And as online educations become more common, they are also becoming easier to afford. About 7 percent of college students, or 1.2 million, conducted their course of study completely over the Internet, the New York Times reported in 2006. And those numbers are growing as new laws go into effect that eliminate previous limits on student loans and other federal aid for online students.
So now that Congress has now equated online study with more traditional forms of education, you now have more ways than ever to finance your Internet degree.
And the trend is likely to continue, toward more and more online students, and greater and greater acceptance of web-based graduates by prospective employers. Similarly, the list of prestigious universities which offer distance learning is expected to continue to grow. And it is even coming to your local high school. Last year, the State of Michigan, “envisioning a future of virtual classrooms,” according to the
Times, made taking at least one online course a requirement for a high-school diploma.
Go ahead, surf the Internet for the degree that’s right for you – it really is the wave of the future in education.
