A bit of horse trivia

When the horse was reintroduced into North America by the Spanish, and especially following the wide spread of the animal following the Pueblo Revolt, the impact was so intense that it not only altered the landscape, it literally led to the creation of entirely new cultures and unique lifeways, some that were unfortunately quite brief. Careful scholars should never quickly jump to any conclusions. Thus it is incredibly difficult to come up with a simple answer as to whether or not Indian cultures in the Southern Plains, following the adoption of horse-based systems, had established an ecological equilibrium with the bison with which they shared the land. The data remains incomplete, historians have concluded, because “two centuries was too brief a time for them to have created a workable system.” Nevertheless, the work of excellent scholars is rich with stunning evidence, all suggesting that the changes happened so fast that any ecological balance was quickly lost. Historians have examined many aspects of bison ecology. They look back to the Pleistocene era extinctions of the so-called mega fauna, which left a massive niche for the bovine populations of the Southern Plains, a niche the horses also found inviting. There is a great wealth of knowledge about the horse-transformation of Comanche culture, the resulting alterations in gender roles, and the different diplomacy horse-culture demanded. And they delve into Indian religious systems that may have actually inhibited the Plains Indians from completely understanding bison ecology and their role in it.

Great Horses in History
