half games over Philadelphia, two
and a half over the Dodgers, four and a half over the Rockies
and five over the Brewers. (Memo to Milwaukee
fans: You definitely want to win your division and without fail.) Atlanta
is not completely out of the picture at 5 1/2 back, but five is an impossible
number of teams to have to leapfrog.
Put it this way, if the Padres finish 7-7 in their final 14, the Phillies
must play 8-5 baseball and the Dodgers 9-4 the rest of the way to finish in a
three-way tie. The chances of a two-way tie are pretty good. How many years can
we avoid that Monday playoff tiebreaker (or two), anyway? This might finally be
the year that fans are treated to an all important extra game ( or two).
The Rockies have never been this good this late in the
year since, well, since for-freaking-ever. They have played good ball lately
and they have refused to fade into the shadow of the Denver Broncos. But even
if the NL West and Wild Card crowd proves a mountain they cannot quite climb,
they could be very formidable spoilers.
If one thing has been proven year after year in this era of postseason play,
it is that a team merely has to get there to have a truly equal chance
at winning the World Series. It doesn't matter whether you win 103 or 83 games.
The Cardinals were the latest to prove that. It has become the annual mantra of
those who reach October.
