The Diamondbacks maintained a two-game lead over the Padres thanks to their
2-1 victory over the Dodgers on Sunday. Los Angeles
-- which last year tied the Padres for the West title but lost the tiebreaker
due to head-to-head records -- is now 4 1/2 out. The last week was a good one
for the Dodgers, and Sunday's loss merely prevented a sweep. Nevertheless, if Arizona
simply splits its final 12 games, the Dodgers will have go 11-2 just to catch
the guys with the new Sedona Red uniforms.
"This was as close to a must-win game as we've had all year,"
D-backs outfielder Eric Byrnes said after the series finale.
Expect to hear a lot of "must-win" references going forward. That
time of year is here.
Chris Young, the Padres' big righty was 8-3 with a 2.00 ERA at the All-Star
break, but he has won once since then, on July 19, going eight consecutive
starts without a victory. Will the results swing back around in the
homestretch?
