My thoughts on Blogging ...
First off, blogging is the quintessential non-economic activity. Put another way, it is really hard to make money blogging! Still, blogs can be very economically significant, and the numbers of bloggers who do actually make money are continuing to grow. So how do you figure out if a blog can be economically viable? That is the million-dollar question, sometimes literally.
It is almost impossible to gauge the economic impact of blogs, because blogs don't really fit the traditional categories that we use to determine economic viability. On the supply side, the sheer number of blogs is growing out of control. Some estimates place the number at over 15 million! But because so many blogs are created and abandoned at such a equally stunning rate, it is almost impossible to get a very accurate number.
The most important measure of the scale of blogging as an economic activity is to look at the impact on labor hours. But agin, this analysis might be hard to trust, because they say the average blog is lucky to get three readers. Of course, this is another number that can be difficult to gauge.
The bottom line is that if you want to blog, you shouldn't plan to make any money out of it! Blogging typically begin as a person simply musing over issues that interest them. When that person's blog starts attracting adequate traffic, then ,and only then, should you begin wondering if it is something that could make you some cash!
