The Detroit Tigers!
With exactly two weeks to go in the regular season, it looks
as though there is a major battle on between two American League teams who
could easily continue playing hot enough to catch the lead teams in their
respective divisions. As the final stretch begins, with just 13 days left in
the month of September, it is obvious that both the Detroit Tigers and the New
York Yankees are capable of wrapping up the Wild Card. The two teams are on
equally hot streaks and a true baseball fan can only ruefully mourn that there
is no more chance of the two teams meeting, whether regular season or post
season.
So now we can only wait and see how the two teams play
against all the scrubs of the league, for the most part. In this, it looks as
though the schedule favors the Bombers, although who can ever predict anything
when it comes to our crazy national pastime. The New York
club has the privilege of playing Baltimore, who have already packed it in, Toronto,
a good team who they nevertheless own, the Devil Rays – hey I could probably
beat the Devil Rays with the local softball club that throws them back at the
bowling alley down the way every Saturday night. Meanwhile Detroit has to play
some real teams, such as the division-leading Indians, the surprising Kansas
City Royal, the always dangerous Minnesota Twins and the – OK, pretty crappy –
Chicago White Sox.
My Pick: Despite the schedule, Yankees choke, Yankees choke,
Yankees choke. The Tigers clinch on the last day of the season.
