Get Sprinting
Because you are working against your own body mass as you
pound out the pavement, long-distance running is a great way to burn calories
and tighten up. Unfortunately, to get a real good calorie-burn requires a
long-haul run, a run of six-plus miles, the kind of run that can take a lot of
time, and cause havoc to susceptible joints in the knees and/or hips. That’s
where wind sprints come in.
Wind sprints can take different forms, but generally consist
of interval training that combines jogging with sprinting, or all-out running
as hard as you possibly can
Wind sprints work, first of all because you are moving
against the mass of your body, and second, because they provide a killer cardio
blast. And although wind sprinting is hard, hard running, it is often far less
stressful on knees and other joints than long-haul running. Also, wind sprints
can be practiced by just about anybody, at any fitness level, although one
should always be sure to check with a doctor to make sure an exercise is right
for them.
One of my favorite ways to wind sprint is on a straight
stretch of road near my home that is just over a mile long. I have divided the
stretch into six relatively-even sections, using landmarks along the road. My
run consists of sprinting the first sixth, jogging the next sixth, sprinting
the next, jogging, sprinting, jogging – then I turn around and do it all the
way back. That way I get a run of just over two miles, with a total sprint of
just over one mile.
And I feel like I’ve just run a marathon.
