churchill-V.jpgV was for Victory

John Morton Blum:

V WAS FOR VICTORY: Politics and American Culture During World War II.

A review:

Most Americans already know what the “V” symbolized back then. The two-finger salute, whether held aloft by Winston Churchill or newsreel GIs, has become an icon in films, folklore, and even on billboards. In fact, as popular culture has come to depict World War II, not only did V stand for victory, but during the that era everything was so simple. The determination needed to beat the enemy could be captured just like that. It was the “Good War,” fought by the “Greatest Generation,” the nation’s finest hour when the men went off to kill a brutal enemy, and women picked up wrenches to keep the war machine rolling.

If it has become popular to view World War II as such a stark struggle of good versus evil, perhaps that only says something about current affairs. John Blum’s examination of politics on the 1940s home front explodes any simple black-and-white image of the war. Blum describes “selected parts” of wartime America to illustrate how the interplay of politics and culture during that crisis eventually set the stage for the postwar period. Realities of the war created a certain kind political environment, a unique milieu in which politics and culture interacted uniquely. Despite notions of nationwide cooperation, however, that wartime cultural setting was never apolitical. In fact, Blum argues that politics and culture were not only intertwined. During the war the two became a single entity, and it has been that way ever since.
