ATVs & Kids -- Think Safety 1st!!
The off-road bug bites early. After all, getting on an ATV
and shredding some dust on a is a whale of a good time. So, it is no huge
surprise that kids as young as five and six are coming down with full-fledged
cases of off-road fever and clamoring for their own all-terrain vehicles.
Therefore, it is essential that these youngsters learn the
ins-and-outs of ATV safety before they start revving up their engines. After
all – they’re our kids and we love them, and they can be pretty fragile,
especially astride one of these machines.
ATV safety for kids begins with a thorough evaluation of the
child’s ability, including the kid’s physical development, visual acuity and
motor skills. Furthermore, potential child riders must be assessed for their
emotional readiness to ride: their decision-making ability and their reasoning
skills, not to mention their ability to follow the rules.
Once a child is ready both physically and emotionally for
the experience of ATVing, it’s time to find the right machine. ATVs come in all
sizes, and many are designed for young riders. Find a ride that the kid can
handle comfortably and confidently.
Finally, before taking off in a cloud of dust, make sure
your child has taken part in a rider-safety course. Some states require a
certified instruction class before children are allowed to ride, and it is
always the smartest path to smart riding.
Once the kid has passed the class, the little one is ready
to ride. Still, be sure to insist on close adult supervision of youngsters
under 16, and, of course, always wear a helmet!
