Oral History: A Brief Look
What do you envision when you hear the words “oral history?”
Most folks define oral history as stories, which are spoken, telling about
certain events that happened in the past. But the definition might not be quite
as simple as all that. Are family memories oral history? What about a story
told at the dinner table? Or a reporter’s tale of a key event that happened in
the past? Is there a real difference between these different forms of so-called
oral history?
Yes, there is a difference. Over the past couple of decades,
the practice of oral history has developed a set of standards that does make it
possible to distinguish between the types of casual retelling of a memory and a
legitimate oral history.
An oral history is created in a recorded interview setting,
using a researched and well-structured interview outline, with a witness to or
participant in a historical event. It seeks to collect and preserve the
person’s first-hand information and make it available to other researchers.
Careful attention to equipment selection, legal and ethical issues and
processing techniques characterize true oral history.
Oral History is usually done out of a desire to collect
information that once may have been recorded in written form. But oral history
does more than document new information. It provides us with a window to the
past and helps history to come alive. Oral history also serves communities with
a history of disenfranchisement, because often the interview serves as a
catalyst for change.
