County are taking the well-spent
time to drive up the Nebo Loop and enjoying the fall colors. The Loop,
which traditionally begins in Payson, on the north side, and ends in Nephi, on the
south, covers some of the most beautiful terrain on the continent, and it is
also a place that once had one of the largest Native American populations in
the Great Basin. In fact, if you had gone to the Nebo
Loop Scenic Byway's Utah Valley Overlook in about A.D. 1500, you would have
seen smoke curling up from several large villages.
If you make the drive, be sure to enjoy the colors. But you might also want
to pay attention to a couple of places where you can still get a glimpse of
life here long before the Mormon pioneers arrived. The Nephi Mounds, is a site where
the Fremont Indians had a settlement around A.D. 1300. As one of the primary
sites for the Fremont Indian farming, the Nephi Mounds was uncovered in recent
times by a farmer.
Walker Flat was a favorite camping spot of the Ute Indians, who, as a
nomadic people, often spent their summers in these mountains. Walker Flat is
also where the Walker War broke out between the Utes and Mormon settlers. The Peteetneet
Academy in Payson is a good place
for more information about Ute Chief Walker and the Walker War.
The city now known as Payson was once called Peteetneet,
named for Chief Peteetneet of the Ute Tribe. Peteetneet, which means
"little waters," is now the name of an academy that exhibits art and
museum pieces.
