We all know why the mouse goes through the maze, but why on earth do we spend out our lives in these boxes?? Here are some tips on making your work day a bit more bearable...
Fight the Office Doldrums
OK – it’s 2:30 p.m.
on a typical workday, and the office may as well be a morgue. You feel like the
living dead. You slump in your cubicle, uninspired. Your eyes droop, and you struggle
to resist the afternoon nap that is stalking you. You could walk down the hall
to the bathroom for the umpteenth time, or, you could go stand and stare at the
vending machine as if the decision between a bag of Doritos and a Bit-o-Honey
is the most critical choice you’ll ever make. But then your boss might see you
and wonder why you aren’t working on the report he’s waiting for.
Face it, lunchtime was an eternity ago and you are now on
the verge of falling into the depths of sleep and drooling all over your
keyboard.
But thanks to the jolly pranksters of the Internet, you
don’t have to wake up at five minutes to 5:00
only to discover your eye, ear and nose pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete. The web
offers a wide array of suggestions to help you stay awake, with antics designed
to liven up the dullest office setting or turn a dusty old board meeting into a
par-tay.
Workplace Fun, at lotsofjokes.com offers these suggestions:
- Encourage
your colleagues to join you in a little synchronized chair-dancing.
- Hang
mosquito netting around your cubicle. When you emerge to get coffee or a
printout or whatever, slap yourself randomly the whole way.
- Feign
an unnatural and hysterical fear of staplers.
- Every
time someone asks you to do something, anything, ask them if they want
fries with that.
- Put
decaf in the coffeemaker for three weeks. Once everyone has withdrawn from
caffeine addiction, switch to espresso.
And bosses: it might do you some good to lighten up
too! Studies have shown that employees who have fun on the job are more
creative, more productive, better decision-makers, and get along better with
co-workers. They also have fewer absentee, late, and sick days than people who
aren't having fun.
So if your office staff looks like the cast of Return of
the Zombies every afternoon, don’t open up
that can of whup-tush. Try a can
of spring-loaded snakes instead. It’s not just good for your funny-bone; it’s
good for your bottom line.
